Sony is putting a paywall on their new "curated store":

“This August, we are transitioning the Crunchyroll Store to a brand-new shopping experience that will be available exclusively for Mega and Ultimate Fans. The new store captures the excitement of convention-exclusive merchandise, collectibles, curated drops, and limited-release products inspired by the anime series you love.”

Crunchyroll explained that “Fan-tier subscribers will still be able to browse its store, while only Mega and Ultimate-tier subscribers will have access to the ‘new curated experience”

Crunchyroll fans soon will have to pay almost $14 a month just to use the company’s new online store.

Watch out! Sony's out for money!

Get the stuff you want fast! Governments and multinational companies like Sony are probably going to try to finish off online piracy after an global online id system is in place.

Sony is moving quickly to try to monopolize their share of the entertainment market.

May very well be. The general goal seems to be social control.

Like Larry Ellison, cofounder and executive at Oracle (of Java, MySQL, Solaris, Oracle Linux, etc.) said in 2024 in a meeting:

"We're going to have supervision," Ellison said. "Every police officer is going to be supervised at all times, and if there's a problem, AI will report that problem and report it to the appropriate person. Citizens will be on their best behavior because we are constantly recording and reporting everything that's going on."

Didn't some British guy write an entire novel about why that's a bad thing actually way back in the 1940s though?

That won't keep political and corporate elites from trying.

Also Sony might be trying to corner the collectible market, putting their own predatory spin on it. Today Gamestop's CEO said that:

“It doesn’t matter at all,” Cohen said. “Software, it mattered in the past. Software today makes up less than 12% of the business, and collectables makes up over half the business. So, it’s totally, totally irrelevant.”

With the spiking of hardware prices, the introduction of online ids, their mismanagement and waste in the development of games like Concord and Marathon, the staggering of PlayStation's growth and all backlash, and the predictions that PlayStation will have a very hard time in the future, especially with next gen, Sony might be trying to keep growing financially by turning up the dial and squeezing more the people who already are invested in their ecosystems, in PlayStation, Crunchyroll, etc.

PlayStation's Game & Network Services division reported an operating income of ¥463.3 billion for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2026, contributing significantly to Sony's overall revenue of approximately ¥31 billion.

I do dislike sony's shenanigans as much as the next guy but it is crunchyroll doing this, not sony..

Like I give a fuck they wan´t us to pay for anime but they make the experiencing so fucking shitty. Expensive trash instead of affordable and good. Then they make it even worse with saying OH no this anime is on here but not for your damn country so fuck you.

Like how R word can one be ?? If you want people to quit pirating then QUIT MAKING IT SUCK ASS and be expensive how fucking hard can it be you STUPID MOFOS.

This is sad the way internet evolves. I wonder if VPN will be still legal in a few years. Maybe we'll have a new digital iron wall, a dark web side with some Linux systems not responding to identity queries, and a shining side, under constant surveillance...
