This is the most concerning news I've seen when it comes to owning physical games. Movies and tv shows are in danger aswell. You cannot trust streaming services to have everything always and they can censor everything whenever they want. Which is proven by the fact that recently an anime called Macross 7 had a scene removed from it on a streaming service.

I'm amazed that something like this is not talked of anywhere mainstream. I guess people are too used to getting absolutely screwed over by companies like sony, disney, and netflix to care that censorship and taking away things you own is normalized. I'm sorry if this reads like a schizophrenic rant but I'm just really depressed about this, seems like none of my hobbies are safe from being destroyed.

Bruh, just download shit.

It's hardly a surprise. Physical game sales have been declining for ages. Limited physical releases for collectors will likely become the norm.

You watch what they want you to watch.
You see what they want you to see.
You know what they  want you to know.
And if you don't like it
You had better not say anything.

I will of course. But what about the people that can't download things? Games, anime, movies, tv. They are all a work of art created by someone who put time from their lives in to it and worked hard to bring their vision to life. It's disrespectful to have someone's life's work like that unable to be viewed by majority of people. Besides. There's plenty of media around that's been completely lost to time already. This is going to get even worse if there's no physical media anymore. With a click of a button everything you create can dissapear forever. Why even bother creating at that point?. Oh and the issue of censorship of older properties is going to get even worse too. That can be done with a click of a button too. See now how horrible this is?

I am one such person.

Can't afford home internet and have to use mobile data for EVERYTHING, so downloads of any size are a no-go for me.

We have been simply forgotten about as times move on.

Things get lost even with physical media around. It's not like they're immune to being destroyed or deteriorating.

I agree with your general sentiment, but I think you're a bit too deep into the physical media cargo cult so many other preservationists are into.

I totally feel you. As someone who much prefers collecting physical media this really sucks to see.

As someone who has gone most of my life without access to decent Internet being stuck on really shitty DSL and satellite internet as recently as just a few years ago this push toward a digital-only landscape is kind of frustrating.

Some people just aren't lucky enough to live in an area where they have access to decent Internet to download these 100+ GB games.

You're better off using μtorrent.

Recently. LG announced they will no longer be manufacturing Blu-Ray players. End of physical media is around the corner. You will own f*ck all and like it.

Very messed up. People don't realize that without physical media you can never really own games/movies/music etc. entirely to yourself (well, besides torrenting, I guess). Not to mention streaming services have been going increasingly downhill. Tons of censorship and greed, all amongst decreasing quality. The fact that Netflix has no movies made before 1973 is mind-boggling. Crazy how internet piracy is doing the most for preservation at this point.

EDIT: I'd also like to point out though that this end of production will probably have little impact on film physical media production (for now). They are ceasing production of BD-R discs for consumer use (still sucks, especially for retro gamers, since even though most people don't use blu-rays for storage, many burn games on them for use with original hardware).

It's important to send a clear message. I don't know maybe if we get a million people to constantly everyday 24/7 message them about how we want to be heard something would happen but i don't know... They would never listen anyway. Unless of course everyone stops downloading but that won't happen. People are too addicted to these streaming sites and celebrate censorship and the removal of shows from services. That's of course untill something they like is censored or removed.

Life was truly better back when physical media was around and there's no going back.

Fucking THIS! this makes me extremely angry. These people pretend they care about preservation untill they don't. They know it wouldn't make them money so that's why they won't do it. These people surely have enough money to build the goddamn online library of Alexandria but these greedy assholes just won't do it!

I was quite literally planning on buying a new Blu-Ray disc next week. Games aside, there are a lot of movies and especially TV shows that you just can't get on any streaming service – if distributors like Shout Factory or DiscoTek Media don't have the ability to press discs of them, they'll just be unavailable, which is really stupid in the information age.

That disc that I wanted to buy, Wait Till Your Father Gets Home, isn't valuable to me just because it's a show I want to watch – the second and third seasons of that series have never been released on home media. I can't even pirate them – the only version of that footage which currently exists is from grainy, decades-old Boomerang rips, and they've all been edited for syndication. Warner Bros is never going to release the show on Paramount+ or anything – it uses licensed music, so they'd have to pay royalties. Can you imagine how many other shows are in the same predicament?

I know that people probably aren't buying as much physical media as they used to, and I'm happy to use streaming when the platforms are worth it. (They often are for music, and often aren't for TV/movies.) From Sony's perspective, I get it – pressing all those discs ain't cheap – but stopping production entirely is just an awful solution to the problem. What they should do, if they're really serious about this, is license the Blu-Ray manufacturing processes to third parties. That way, they completely offload the production to other businesses and still make plenty of money – it's a win-win! I guess they still want to protect that technology, but why bother if you're not going to use or make money with it?

I wouldn't have to be if the human garbage that runs companies like sony actually preserved their stuff but they don't! Like i said it effects a lot more than games so you better join my cult and fast before they also go after downloading things. I'm seriously predicting companies will crackdown so hard on piratism too as soon as they can because they simply don't want us to have anything.

Yes, I think big companies probably hire minions as archivists or something, and that's nothing new; remember SE losing the masters for the FF7, 8 and 9 pre-rendered backgrounds? yuup.
And we are talking about a key franchise here. Imagine how badly the treated the likes of Vagrant Story.

The companies have been trying to crack down on the piracy for decades now and failed to do any lasting damage. I don't think this time will be any different.

They might aswell straight up burn the computers because there's no way a big company can be this incompetent unless they have malicious intent. Which i know they do have.

They license an absolute ton of old TV shows from the U.S., Canada, Japan, and the U.K., and always include loads of cool extra features and excellent packaging. Without their efforts, a ton of TV history would be lost forever.
