According to Gematsu:
Company to contribute to PlayStation's broader efforts in "advancing state of the art visual computing" within games,
Sony Interactive Entertainment has acquired Cinemersive Labs, a United Kingdom-based machine learning and computer vision company founded in 2022, the PlayStation manufacturer announced.

What is Cinemersive Labs?
Cinemersive Labs, “a specialized team with deep expertise in computer vision and machine learning,” will join Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Visual Computing Group and contribute to the company’s broader efforts in “advancing state of the art visual computing” within games, including “applying machine learning to enhance gameplay visuals, improve rendering techniques, and unlock new levels of visual fidelity for players.”

Interesting, definitely, but Sony should focus on catering to the tastes of their dwindling consumers. Graphical quality only matters so much, especially if the added fidelity is mostly for remasters, remakes, rereleases, sequels and live service games...

I anticipate that will be exactly what the acquisition is for - especially when Sony unveils their Steam-like "Play" client for the PC in the near future, with the store filled to the brim with AI up-rezzed PS1 -> PS5 titles.

Ben Affleck sold his AI company to Netflix. There's no stopping this stuff, it's here and it's going to become more and more prevalent. Everyone's investing in it and I can't fault Sony for doing it. I'll just stick to watching old films since I don't like most new ones.

I do find it funny how all of these rich people went from "climate change will be the end of us" to being AI evangelists. That's a complete 180.

There are common connections between "climate change activism" and "AI evangelism." Both are designed to inhibit "small folk" creativity while distracting the masses from the BS that Wall Street pulls ever third-of-a-second.

Their timing couldn't have been worse. They shutdown two studios, one of them being beloved(Bluepoint) and then announce they are acquiring an AI studio? Seriously, what is Sony even doing at this point??
Throwing desperately money against a wall thats closing in and kills sony if they touch it .

At this point they lost their mind and cant offer something good anymore . They should make new inhouse studios themselves instead gobbling up studios and spit them out . They have a huge amount of old IPs that they could use to reboot / remake or even just simply make new games out of those .
They forgot that they make not only consoles but can make also GAMES aswell . And it doesnt need huge multi-billion dollar projects but trying to get back at square one and make games that are not investor-baits . They had back then huge success with small projects since the ps1 and they let those studios grow in competence and efficiency normally . But now they wreck themselves because they dont have normal means of earning money in a basic way .

They are ridiculously greedy, they need a bitchslap like the PS3.

we consumers should demand a law that forbids large companies to buy up other companies. Makes it a criminal offense for large companies to buy up competition. Because never ever have buying up smaller companies done anything good for consumers or small companies.

There are antitrust laws.

It should be illegal for companies to buy other companies for just profits or don't do squat with them and their IPs.

not like that´s doing much. Honestly it should be outright illegal that if you caught doing it your company is forcibly shut down and all your asset´s taken away.

Without getting to neoliberalism/political here, there's jack shit we can do cuz all they do is roll a big fat billion dollar check ::cirnoshrug We did try to stop Microsoft and they just payed their way out of it.

Smaller and indie companies should make a consortium or some kind of group to prevent them from getting bought.

And people wonder WHY the game industry was the first to go belly-up thanks to AI...

ai upscaling (i mean even upscaling in general) is a auto ick and makes me not want to buy a piece of media and im usually rather supportive when companies decide to make old games available again

They can't afford to keep blue point. But they can afford to buy a company for genAI bullshit! Fuck you, Sony!

AI upscaling tech is one of the best things to happen to modern gaming where UE5 games are as heavy as they are, where we have ray tracing and path tracing, etc. It allows you to do more with less. PSSR 2 is magic. The PSSR 2 mode often looks better than the 4K quality mode in games.

its not what i want from games, while im not fond of ai its not even that, i just dont like the graphical style of most modern games, its why i stick with retro stuff or just indie/stylized things

Heavy case of YMMV, and fuck that shit. I may like certain UE5 games, but none of this is required at all and a waste of resources and time. I'll hear nothing else otherwise.

Agreed.

No, sorry but I do not agree with that stance.

I'd rather have a lower scaled game made with an artistic intent behind than some shoddy updcale...

In fact, I'd rather have devs learning to optimise their stuff.

NVIDIA’s demo of DLSS 5 showed just how bad AI can look; I’m not a big fan of it either, and I think that’s certainly one of the reasons why I tend to play older games—especially since all these AI mechanics are causing game optimization to be neglected more and more. I’m very critical of this; a lot is being replaced by AI to speed up processes, but quality suffers as a result.
