Sony ending physical disc production in 2028, going digital only

At this point Gladdy, what is the point of owning a Playstation? They can easily kill off any of there storefronts down the road and since its all digital then why even go with Sony or any console? This might mark the end of consoles as we know it.
It's the ease of installation, or at least it has been. Prior to the current RAM crisis, you couldn't build a PC for the same price that matched a PS5 in performance. There was no configuration issues, no thinking about it, you could buy a game on a PS5 and knew that it was designed to work on the system.

That math has changed a bit for me I think. We no longer get those leaps in graphical power each generation, so PC hardware has been adequate for longer and longer, plus the prices continue to rise (although PCs aren't immune to that either). Ironically though, that ease of set up also means you're locked into a single box in your living room, and I think that's what's going to kill the PlayStation for me. I can buy a game on Steam and know that it works on anything with a keyboard.

9th generation of consoles were already sucked. We just literally renting game consoles. Without internet it's just a brick for the most part (we can't even turn on new consoles without internet updates first lol). We even cant manually backup our own save files! Next gen consoles will be even worse =\

All those online storefronts are good and convenient, sure. But again, its renting. Back in the day there were Games for Windows LIVE marketplace and Windows Phone marketplace. And when MS shut them down completely all our purchases just vanished in the blink of the eye. Physical media is the way of owning things.

PS: sry for any grammar errors

Disagree with that. The majority of games still have playable builds on the disc. Do they have updates? Sure. But I'll take the best of both worlds, physical disc with a playable build + online updates, over entirely digital.
Sure i respect that, but either way for me it still feels like a key upon receiving the disc.
Imagine you don't have internet for sec, you buy let's say... PS4 physical of Cyberpunk, load whatever is there on the disc by inserting it into the drive. then what? 'oh i got the crappy, rushed, incomplete build' playable or not, it depends on circumstance and the game itself.
My stance is simply that what i have in-hand is not complete by default anyway and without internet the item is barebones, practically nothing.

I don't think so. I just think that what you see with the Steam Deck and the retro emulation consoles is more or less going to be the new frame of reference.

I saw the writing on the wall years ago, and people got mad at me for saying I preferred digital to physical generally because blah blah blah preservation blah blah blah "digital is not real ownership cause I'm too scared to download a rom for a game I have the proof of purchase for blah blah blah."

I've always said the trouble is outdated & out-of-touch copyright laws, not the medium. That's where I think there's going to be difficulties. Companies like Sony or Nintendo (Xbox is a bit of a different beast) in particular want the economic benefits of the transition to a largely digital business model but they want to try to shore up against the natural consequences and so they try to find these middle ground solutions that allow them to keep control that are very anti-consumer and ironically, just push people more towards digital piracy with all the freedom & benefits it offers.

Entertainment is disposable. Hoarding movie, music, and now gaming collections is increasingly niche and a novelty. All that plastic junk will rot in sunlight and be arguably worthless in a few decades since the platforms to access them are closed.

Entire generations have grown up in front of internet access, iPads or smart phones. Buying physical products is alien to them. It's increasingly a gimmick, like buying magazines, or going to a Drive In movie theater to sit around and watch the latest piece of shit waste of brain cells that Hollywood slapped together. An experience most will never think to have, that they can easily live without.

The magazines are all full of slop and extra advertising. The physical games don't have complete content or even paper game manuals included. It's all degenerated into inconvenient trash.

What's the point of buying playstation games then?

People are gonna complain but then they will announce Bloodborne Remake as a starting title or idk new Spiderman and then sony would make another best selling console now without discs

It was inevitable, I suppose. If it brings prices down I will consider returning to the PlayStation, otherwise I stopped with the 3.

I made the right call never getting the PS5. This gen is a total letdown.

PlayStation is going for shit bingo this gen with dynamic prices, new DRM, delisting and taking away hundreds of bought digital content and ending physical games.

At this point, I'd be very wary to buy into current PlayStation. They seem to care little about their actual customers.

This should come as a surprise to no one. Movies and music went digital a long time ago, same with PC gaming, so it was only a matter of time before console gaming followed suit.

From a technological standpoint, games aren't even read from the disc anymore. Modern disc reading speeds are too slow to load game data. That's why modern games are installed directly to the hard drive. When you buy a physical PS4 or PS5 game, the disc is nothing more than a glorified key to unlock the game that's already installed and ready to go on your console. Nintendo Switch games were the exception since they used cartridges, but even those had slower loading times than just installing the game on the hard drive. Heck, there are still Switch games out there that don't even give you the option to run off the cartridge - you have to download the game anyways.

And despite the anecdotal evidence presented in this thread, and the plea from people to keep physical gaming media alive, the numbers don't lie: The vast majority of the gaming public does not buy physical media anymore. Only 15% of game sales on Playstation are physical. Square Enix and Capcom released financial reports not too long ago, and their sales numbers for physical media is pitiful. Square Enix's physical sales only account for 19% of their total sales, and Capcom's numbers are even lower at 7%. Nintendo fairs better, with 67% of their game sales being digital, but that's quite an upward trend from last year when 53% of their game sales were digital.

Now there are benefits to an all digital future. As an old fart who's been playing games since I was an amoeba, I have amassed quite a collection of boxes that do nothing but take up space. Maybe my Wii U copy of Rayman Legends can make for a fine coaster? In any case, I'm running out of shelf space or this stuff. I ended up boxing up everything and shoving it in my basement in order to make room for other things. Meanwhile, my Steam library contains hunders of games and is no bigger than the black box I have tied to my monitor and keyboard.

But convenience comes with a trade-off, which is consumer control. This is the part that people are afraid of, myself included. Companies have been shifting away from providing products in favour of providing services instead. This works better for them because it's easier and more profitable to force people to pay subscription fees over a long period of time, compared to the alternative of working hard to sell people on individual purchases. Digital media is also a lot cheaper for them to distribute over putting a disc in a box and shipping it around the world.

Not to mention that it also makes it really easy for them to cut people off from things. Just the other day, Sony announced they were removing movies and TV shows off of their service with no way for people to access them even if they already paid for them. It's also why Ubisoft shoves Uplay into everything. Ubisoft can cut me off from a Steam copy of Rayman Legends if they wanted to, but if they want my Wii U copy then they'll have to come to my house and pry it from my cold, dead hands beverage.

Ultimately this boils down to how much we trust the companies that provide these services. People seem to let Steam slide in this regard because they seem to trust Valve as a company, but I don't know how many people trust Sony. There's also an element of consumer apathy in regards to this. Companies keep pushing how far they can take things, and they'll keep going as long as people are willing to give them cash. We can scream about this all day on social media, but money talks a lot louder. Just look at the Pokemon series as an example - people have been noting the drop in quality of the main games for quite some time, but the games keep breaking sales records which gives The Pokemon Company no incentive to make a better product. Personally, I'm gonna vote with my wallet and continue to play my totally legitimate game rips on my PC via emulation.

Neat, so my physical collection will now be obsolete because Sony will soon stop making disc drives and my disc drive will eventually stop reading discs 😉

Nice. So:
  • Delisted games will be removed from your digital collection forever. (Source: All of the delisting stuff literally happening right now)
  • No more resale value.
  • No more access once the servers shut down (through official channels, don't want to hear the argument of "just pirate it" as some kind of defence of the move).
  • Prices completely dictated by Sony and publishers/devs - no Amazon sales or Gamestop sales or games costing less as they naturally get older.
  • Download only no pop and play.
  • Likely some kind of "activation limit" tied in.
  • More hard drive space being taken up by every single game in a market with surging memory prices.
  • Banned/Hacked/Locked out of account = Entire game library lost forever if you can't win over Sony support.
Missed anything on this anti-consumer list?

It was inevitable, I suppose. If it brings prices down I will consider returning to the PlayStation, otherwise I stopped with the 3.
If anything I think prices will go up since Playstation won't have physical retailers to compete with anymore, Sony will control everything on PS6.

Exactly. And enjoy never having games go down in price any more as they age and prices being commanded completely by Sony and/or the publishers/devs of games.

Slowly, but surely, they intend to take away from the consumers the ownership of the purchased products.
If in the future we wish to keep our (only-digital) games, we will have to fight for it now.

Yeah but Steam isn't going to close down in 20 years after like they are doing with PS3/PSVita stores. ITs officially over for a lot of Playstation users from one I seen on Twitter.
I’d bet anything in 20 years Steam, GoG, and itch will not be the same either.
