Sony ending physical disc production in 2028, going digital only

Contact Sony and lose it.

@extermist threaten you won't buy anything else in the platform and ditch the console for the PC and Steam. It will make support work better.

It unscrewed my recent problem with Nintendo support almost immediately.

Given how unpopular PlayStation is right now, it will probably work.
For clarity none of these screenshots are mine.
I'm just posting these to inform everone in the thread that these things CAN happen.

I don't even have a PS5 and I gave away all my consoles.

Yeah, PlayStation support is a shit show! Not even its contact number is on their official website... That's PlayStation's level of anticonsumerism. 😂

The thing about vpn's is you can legitimately make your own if you don't mind spending the money on it, vpn's are impossible to stop without completely changing the structure of the internet.

That said the uk's case is desperation, they are trying to cover it up but the uk is, at least in some areas, on the brink of civil war i've been hearing from some people over there, not saying this is true or false but it's definitely bad, but if that's the case it's a knee jerk reaction to control the conversation but if it's at this point it's probably too late as now you have groups like the IRA reactivated.

But i need to stop there, that's politics, but i have to mention what i see exactly happening in the uk.
I'm in the UK and I mean no disrespect to you, but you've been misinformed - we are nowhere near on the verge of a civil war. We're politically divided, but we have been since 2016. There isn't widespread political violence. Not sure what you mean about the IRA, there have been off-shoots of it for decades but that's in Northern Ireland, which is its own political situation and very different from the rest of the UK. Most of us in the rest of the country would be fine with N. Ireland leaving the UK and reunifying with the Republic of Ireland if a majority of people there voted for that.

Doesn't affect me since I primarily play retro games, owning only a handful of modern games (on modern systems such as PS4), all physical. And I don't plan on buying PS6 let alone PS5.

I mean i guess if you don't consider northern ireland and a few areas of the british isles as part of the uk it's not so bad, it's definitely worse in some areas but the worst of it is in northern ireland.

They aren't going to backtrack, they are already converting the disc plants and anyone who think nintendo won't do this as soon as they see a opportunity is a fool, they've been planning this since the start of the generation.
As much as i hate to say this, the only options are to make sony suffer and be forced to reopen their disc plants, the problem is that takes time and people won't really boycott sony until the ps6, but this is requiring sony to even care about single player gamers and not live service, which i think is why they really don't care about the backlash.

Imo sony is lost.

As if things couldn't get worse:

Remember xbox one's push for movies?
History doesn't repeat but damn does it rhyme.

I disagree that discs are pointless. You've bought into the BS these greedy ass companies want you to believe. Its a matter of ownership. I don't mind having something like Minecraft or Rocket League as a digital copy. A major release like RE9 is something I'd prefer to own a physical copy of. I was able to let my brother borrow it after I beat it because I physically own the game. Its mine to do with as I please. I could trade it toward another game, sell it, or let someone borrow it. With a digital copy of RE9, I can't do any of that.
well i don't do any of that stuff (sell, trade, let anyone borrow)
my brother and I share one console so we just switch profiles and done, he's playing or i'm playing,
i'm a lazy **** this has nothing to do with the companies.
i was full digital since PS3 times i was actually quite happy to not have to deal with physically using discs since then.
idk, i guess i'm built different, i much prefer digital games.
and before anyone says "ps3 store is gone" yeah i got custom firmware on my PS3 and ps3 emulation works well enough. i really don't care lol.

wild take considering this is a retro forum.
also a forum about emulation and game preservation (via digital rom downloads)
unless you're telling me you use physical carts and discs on your emulators.

One other thing i'll be sad too is going to tech shops - supermarket and see even less and less games.

Sony didn't started it though but it will be a major hit to their face.

Just thinking back then we had a large choice of pc games and all the consoles exclusives.

Now you don't even see pc games anymore, you barely see any xbox game anymore and soon you won't see any sony games anymore..

What's the future in this? Only a few nintendo games? It's a pretty sad view.

god i hate the fact Nintendo pretty much "winning" just because everyone else is *way* too expensive and/or going full throttle in anti consumer ways like this.

and even then 450-500 is still a hard ask.

I mean Nintendo themselves isn't innocent or perfect given their own anti consumer ways but so far hasn't committed something this blatant yet.

and it will be worse off because of it the lack of competition means no one innovates.

I think pc is winning more than nintendo is due to people waking up to the horrors of DRM.

The best part (so far):

Sony says that they are following a "consumer shift" into digital-only. We already know that this is a lie - when given the choice between physical or digital the vast majority of purchases are physical. However, even before this announcement, Sony was doing something quietly in the background. Their largest producer of discs (music, movie, game) in Austria was already shifting production of discs to micro lenses. Now, according to the plant manager, these micro lenses "could be used to project turn signals onto asphalt." Awww...that sounds so ni-

MICRO LENSES ARE USED FOR AI DATA CENTERS!!!

To add more salt to the wound ::warcraft-skeleton
I mean hell even ubisoft tried something similar like having a F2P account with acquired games through giveaways but it's not exactly the case here.

As much as i dislike sony fpr everything they've done, this seems to be to comply with the uk's data retention laws and at least for now, only seems to apply to the uk.

That being said i wouldn't be surprised if they'd try it if they thought they legally could everywhere.

When it comes to laws like this, compliance is the first step for certain individuals to start treating you like a carpet. In that case, they don't care about your privacy or your digital footprint, they want to seize your ownership.::raymanknows

They never cared about privacy to begin with.
Sony got hacked back in 2011. ::nervous-prinny

Now every company suddenly cares about "privacy"
By deleting inactive accounts that you bought games with your own money.::nervous-prinny

And "protecting the children"

By forcing you to upload either your face or ID::huhsonic

We've seen time and time again it's the polar opposite.::sonic-waiting

Micro lenses are used for micro processors and GPUs, ofcourse data centers use those as well.

Virtual reality headsets, cameras (which is a big industry for sony, especially with gen-z getting really into photography), lithographic machines, military weaponry involving lasers, some construction and workshop tools and of course, telescopes and the like in the medical and astrological industries.

Needless to say, that's a market that's constantly in demand.

You don't get it. Sony, as a whole (movie, music, game) is shifting production away from physical media to micro lenses. This is a MASSIVE increase in micro lens production. There is only one reason Sony, as a whole would do this:

Cloud streaming.

Sony is setting up their entire home entertainment divisions for streaming. No ownership. No consumer rights.

When you put it that way, then yeah, it does make sense.
