A friend of mine just casually asked if I wanted a PS2 the other day and I was flabbergasted but managed to give a modest “Yeah I’ll take that off your hands.”

Apparently the entire time I’ve known her she has had her old PS2 just hanging out in storage. I can’t believe she never mentioned it before!

Then when she showed up to drop
it off, she said she found her old PS3 in the same box and gave me that too!

She didn’t have any games to give me, but I’m still super stoked. I already modded the PS3 to play backup ISO files and am looking into doing the same for the PS2. Might also look around for cheap physical copies at thrift stores around town. Definitely not shopping for anything online, retro game prices are insane.

The fat PS2 is wonderful to hack, all sorts of fun stuff, depending on how deep you want to go down the rabbit hole.

You have the basic, get a magic memory card to load backups. You can buy a FreeMCBoot memory card for like 10 USD or if you want to just start and end with an SD card, get a MemCard Pro 2, they have a SD card and allow for launching of games straight from it, though they are more pricey at 50 USD

You have get the HDD attachment and swap out the IDE interface for a SATA interface so you can have a huge Solid State Drive with all the games you could ever want.

You have that crazy translation project for the PSBBN that GitHub User CosmicScale that feels like making a modern PS2 OS at this point.

Have fun!

No no, don't get a MemCard Pro 2, that's an overpriced stuff from 8bitdo. Get better the PsxMemCard Gen2, its chinese counterpart, which is a SD2PSX, and it only costs around 20€.

For PS3, get a SSD as soon as you can, it does not matter it's only 250-500GB, it's better to have SSD than HDD I assure you.

Thank you, that is what it was called. Yeah, no I just checked what was actually sticking out of my PS2 and I have a MemCard Gen2 off AliExpress for like 20 USD. I was wondering why it was so much more now then before, I guess I misremembering.

I recommend Infamous and Killzone 2.

I was just thinking of modding my PS3 because I've been on a Gundam kick lately and was gonna go buy Dynasty Warriors Gundam Reborn but found out it was delisted a year ago. If it's not easy I won't be doing it though, I'm dumb with stuff like that lol

A lot of PS2/PS3 stuff still isn't too bad price wise, depends on what you're looking for.

Modding a PS3 is fairly easy I'd say. If you know how to move files between a computer and a USB stick and follow instructions you should be perfectly fine.

you should get a free mcboot memory card from amazon then you can just grab games from the repo, pop them on a flash drive, and play them on your ps2 without having to mod it. any game uder 5 gigs will work most of the time the storage limit is bc the flash drive has to be formatted to FAT32 for mcboot to read it. You can also download movies as long as you use AVI format the media player built into it can read them. and music.
So you can turn your ps2 into a complete entertainment system with tons of music movies and shows and ps2 games all from a flash drive with a little tinkering.
sometimes a game you want will be too big like silent hill 2 original iso is too big but the greatest hits version fits the file size limit so check for alternate versions of a game if its too big.

The PS3 truly holds up still It still has an active online community for. few games on weekends at least even. I wanna get Warhawk next.

It’s super easy! There are different routes for different models, but YouTube has loads of easy to follow videos.
