So, what's the best 'single installment' JRPG game you know?

I forgot about that little detail xd
Technically speaking, solatorobo: red the hunter is like a spiritual sequel... so, don't worry, it is a good choice, after all.
from the company of .hack// series, had it rough, in the meanwhile.

Not exactly a "JRPG" perse, and it's very inspired by its contemporaries, those being King's Field and Shadow Tower, but I'm a really big fan of Lunacid, an indie first person dungeon crawler.

It's getting a prequel made in the Sword of Moonlight engine, which is an updated version of the King's Field engine, and apparently getting a DLC/expansion soon.

I won't say that it's the "best", but it has so much love and soul put into it that it hardly even matters. The environments are beautiful and haunting, the music is fantastic, and the lore is pretty damn cool. I think for a lot of people, the combat could be hit or miss, but I find it decently fun.

I'll have to break your rule here and recommend a sequence(a prequel in this case). That's Lufia 2: Rise of the Sinistrals on the SNES. Possibly the best non squareenix RPG on the system but definitely the one with the best ending. This game never get the love it deserves...

Actually, it gets a lot of love, when it is about the greatest mysteries in the game, like the "secret door" or about arek the absolute. don't forget about the addictive gruberik's ancient cave, its 100 floors...
and how the enchanted cave 1 & 2 flash games were made possible.

that's a true Goat
I said before 'that's all for now'...
there are many more, but I'll leave it at that. I imagine there will be a character limit per forum message...
I hope it will be useful for you.

I'm happy to hear it. And about the ancient cave, yeah, it's almost two games in one, a great RPG + a Mystery Dungeon.

IMO, I love and hate that many JRPGs have more than three sequels and are cross-platform.
So, I'm bored and too lazy to start a new series. I want to know the best "single-installment" game you know.
I'd like to suggest Shining the Holy Ark on the Sega Saturn. It's made by the same team as the Golden Sun games (Camelot) and has many similar mechanics but is far superior. Whilst it's set in the same universe as Shining Force 3 (also made by Camelot but a TRPG rather than JRPG), the games are set many years apart and any crossover stuff is easter eggs rather than key plot points.

I literally just got ahold of this game again recently! I loved my Saturn, and this game was one of the reasons why (also Nights: Into Dreams and Albert Odyssey).

Oh, hey, there's another suggestion - Albert Odyssey on the Saturn. It's a little slow paced, but it's got a decent story, good characters, and a sense of humor. Technically not a single game - there are others in the series, but the preceding game was a TRPG for the SNES, and only has a tenuous connection. Fair warning. it's official translation was Working Designs, so if that's something that bothers you...

I think some people are confused with tc's question. He meant a JRPG game that only had one release, and no sequels or prequels across platforms. So, Xenogears wouldn't qualify, as Xenosaga is part of it's Universe. Same with Chrono Trigger, as there's Cross, and so on. Titles like Legend of Dragoon, Vanguard Bandits, Nostalgia, Black Sigil, Emerald Dragon, etc are good answers.

Xenogears =/= Xenosaga
Like, a spiritual successor does not a sequel make.

Skies of arcadia! ( the dreamcast version is fantastic in terms of audio quality and i adored the vmu games ), the gamecube version is great for what it added
Resonance of fate/End of eternity is pretty fantastic for it's unique take on turn based combat

Albert Odyssey: Legend of Eldean (I count it as the other titles have no full English patch)
The Alliance Alive (HD Remastered)
Arc Rise Fantasia (even with the voice acting...)
Astria Ascending
Beyond the Beyond
Black Sigil: Blade of the Exiled (aka “Hey, you got my GBA in my DS!”)
CIMA: The Enemy
Cosmic Star Heroine
Crystalis (if that counts, more Zelda than RPG)...
Dark Rose Valkyrie
Dragon Star Varnir
Dual Hearts
Edge of Eternity
Emerald Dragon
Enchanted Arms
End of Serenity
Eternal Sonata
Fragile Dreams: Farewell Ruins of the Moon (aka Mind Fuck – The Video Game)
The Granstream Saga
GrimGrimoire (Once More)
Hexyz Force
I Am Setsuna
Infinite Undiscovery
Jeanne D'arc
The Last Remnant
The Last Story
Legend of Dragoon
The Legend of Legacy
Live A Live
Lost Odyssey
The Magic of Scheherazade
Metaphor: ReFantazio (For now it’s a 1-&-Done…)
Odin Sphere Leifthrasir
Omega Quintet (oddly part of a franchise of JRPGs but not a series...)
Pandora's Tower
Radiant Historia (Perfect Chronology)
Radiata Stories
Resonance of Fate
Rogue Galaxy (great game but a CHORE to 100%)
Sands of Destruction (an oft forgotten title...even though it had an anime around it)
Sea of Stars
Sigma Star Saga
Skies of Arcadia
Surging Aura
Thousand Arms
Threads of Fate
Treasure of the Rudras
Trinity Universe
The Twisted Tales of Spike McFang
Vagrant Story (counted as it has no sequels/prequels, just games on the same planet)

Someone beat me to suggesting Cima The Enemy, I guess my work here is done.

Front Mission: Gun Hazard, yeah i know it´s not a full on JRPG, but it has the elements that partly make one, honestly great game.

Wizard of Oz?

I don't know if it counts but Panzer Dragoon Saga? Even if there are other games but it's still the only RPG.

Dark Savior
Lucienne's Quest / Sword & Sorcery
EGG: Elemental Gimmick Gear
Crusader of Centy / Soleil
Okage: Shadow King
Battle Blues
Kartia: The Word of Fate / Rebus
Azure Dreams
Hoshigami: Ruining Blue Earth
Terra Phantastica
Guardian War / Powers Kingdom
Soldnerschild
The Mystic Dragoons
Neugier: Umi to Kaze no Kodou
Princess Minerva
Orphen: Scion of Sorcery
Eternal Eyes / Koukroseatro: Yūkyū no Hitomi
Linkle Liver Story
Bealphareth
Ecsaform

I am supporting Team Breath of Fire IV.
Foolish Mortal, didst thou think that thou canst kill me?
Not sure if i am quoting it correctly, it has been over a Decade :)
But i love the different Story Strings and Characters, great World Building and Music plus Atmosphere.

And hey, how often can you play as an God?

Considering that is part of the Front Mission franchise, I have my doubts it counts...

Anyway, as for my recommendation that no one else has said yet... Infinite Space is a good one.

Rogue Galaxy (great game but a CHORE to 100%)
Can confirm. Hated the entire combat system by the end. Did GSE twice for Insectron.

You don't have to play the rest of the series, but please play Wild Arms 1. It's quintessential JRPG goodness.

Edit: fucking Terranigma
