Is that supposed to be assault?

idk, my Discord dealings got narrowed down to further stayin in touch with the road dawgs homeys I've had for decades who are like brothers/sisters n a couple vidgame chats I barely bother with n a room of my closest 'Discord' friends who all understand n respect each other n keep the vibe as chiLL as a discord chat *can be*

that said, if Discord dies someone wiLL quickly locate replacement platforms/mediums n then we'll chiLL elsewheres until wutev'R means of conveyance buys the farm n goes to AppHeLL to simmer n marinate y'herD

And ICQ.
I kind of miss that wild west kind of vibe when it came to instant messaging. There was a bit more character to the proceedings. Discord is predatory, sterile and highly corporatified; a true quasi-monopoly.

God dammit I saw the title and thought it was someone's pet, not some dumb software, don't scare me like that. 😅

Why does everyone hate Discord so much? I never really even heard this opinion until I came to this forum.
It's not a problem with the software itself (except that it's proprietary, doesn't respect your privacy and is electron bloat but that isn't really different from what we had before), it's rather what it tries to do, which is unifying convenient communication targeted towards gamers, nerds and the new generation. This was inevitable, Discord just happened to be the one to get to the cake first.

While yes, there are cases of bad experiences, especially in massive servers, I personally never had a problem with it. All public servers I engaged with were fairly organized and with rules in place. And I don't count drama between simple groups of friends because the platform isn't really relevant in that case.

I think the Discord hate is largely a case of selection bias, either because people hear stories about groomers or themselves had some sort of bad experience and think it's all like this. Not to mention some of them are either socially inapt hotheads or boomers who can't stand seeing pronouns in front of them.

it's shit and ass
it used to be much better before like around 2017
fuck discord and social media in general
my mental state has been much better being off of it (and social media as a whole) cos now i can actually focus on myself and playing all the retro shit i wanna play (and continue watching anime without worrying about anyone wanting to stay in voice chat)

I guess so? I guess it depends on how you choose to use it. I've never felt obligated to be active or anything like that.

That's what I figured. It's not like regular social media where you can doomscroll and whatnot.

I've also never had a bad experience in a larger server. Granted, the largest server I'm in has a yearly invite event which limits joining, and the mods are exceptional at cracking down on bad stuff. It's massive, but chill.

The IRCs (Internet Relay Chats) were born practically alongside the internet itself, but any IRC is inherently garbage due to the very structure it was built on.

In these spaces it makes no sense to create content that is personal, meaningful, transformative or original, because the moment something is posted, it’s immediately buried under a flood of messages from hundreds of individuals suffering from severe attention deficit, who find it impossible to read a message longer than three lines.

Moreover, the resources shared there can’t even be reused by people using search engines, since chats are closed ecosystems with no future for communities (they were the final nail in the coffin for the forums, after Facebook had already taken the cake in hand).

They're only really useful for arranging sex or chatting with friends you already know in real life.
