I think they are some of the most underrated atmospheric things that a game can bring to the table when it comes to atmosphere. They can evoke intense feelings when it comes literally to the feel of the game, to the point where they end up being fundamental at times for it to properly work (unless you're in an enclosed environment with no windows).

It's the vastness of everything that permeates all over the game itself, where you can see your character, being alone... in a world so vast, and yet not able to go to those places.

What do you guys think about them? And what's your favourite skybox?

Here's one from DOOM

I love this one

This can be applied to many and I really mean MANY games, especially open world ones

But my favourite would be Super Mario 64

Also Half Life 2 and Monster Hunter World, both have an incredible looking skybox and it's…just gorgeous

I always remember the Manolia Cathedral in Chrono Trigger because of it's theme. It gave me the feeling of being in a "holy place" the first time I got to that part.

If you want a representation of a unholy place with some holy music, you should listen to the DMC3 theme for hell. At least the part of the chorus, cause it's so... fantastic and dreamlike.
