Since The dreamcast was one of the most underrated consoles of the sixth gen, how many still own the dreamcast and still play games well.

Frankly, the wire coming out of the bottom was an almost deal breaker for me.

I bought mine a couple of years ago.

I got Dead or Alive 2, Rainbow six, Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 and Gundam 0079... and well other burned games as well as some homebrews like StarFox 64 or the Half-Life port.

I really like the controller, tho it suffers from the lack of a second stick, and the VMU are a great idea that sadly didnt take off.

As for the condition of the console, it is not bad. I sadly dont have space to fit is so I can normally play it, but it is working somewhat nice. My only problem is that Half-Life, because it constantly loads and unload data, heats up the laser too much sometimes and then it just stops reading disc until it "rest" a little.

Imagine if Sega sold new replacement readers for the console. They would be rich.

If you're willing to spend a bit of money and don't mind cracking open the Dreamcast, you could always get an optical drive emulator and install it. This way, your games will read off an SD card and bypass the laser altogether.

I have open my DC like 4 or 5 times already (different issues and some cleaning) so Im nos afraid to make the change. I just feel if I will just load everything on a SD, I just cut everything and just get an emulator.

I know the console will probably die one day, maybe once that day comes.

Aside from having changed the optical drive twice since it was bought new in '99, my Dreamcast is stock, so I get you.

I LOVE the Dreamcast, it's probably my second or third favorite console I own, and I try to play it a couple times a week. I bought mine off of a friend like 4 years ago for $15 and it was easily the best purchase I'd made that year. While my DC is starting to show its age, it's still able to boot up games and play them with relative ease; you just gotta wait like 10 minutes. I later learned it's a 9/9/99 console, which may explain why it takes so long to read discs.

Growing up I was a PlayStation only household, so I never got to experience the beauty of the DC until WAY later in life and I'd argue it added to the "fun-factor" of playing with the console.

Still love and play mine! I need to mod it though, had to sell most of my rare games when I incurred some medical debt a few years ago so I don't have as much to play on it. It also has a weird issue where the chip in charge of displaying FMVs is messed up so whenever a game plays an FMV it just displays a super blotchy, glitchy image. Still, it is one of my all time favorite consoles and one I frequently seek out when stressed to give me a very specific sense of nostalgia and comfort. It was the first home console I ever started really collecting for as up until 2015 or so I was only collecting for handhelds.

When it came to the 6th gen, all 4 consoles were absolute peak. There is just something about the boundless ambition of the Dreamcast and the fact that it managed to have such an amazing library despite only being on market for 2-3 years that makes it such an unbelievable piece of hardware. It is a system that fills me with a sense of optimism and hope when I play something on it. Sega was giving it their all and it absolutely showed.

Still have my Dreamcast. I never really owned one, my brothers did, so I had to get it the moment I saw it. Getting some games are pretty rough, even when I get a monthly box containing retro games, but I did stream with the Dreamcast early in my tenure, event gotten my friend bummed out for failing hard in Sonic Shuffle.

but IMO the Dreamcast is one of the most overrated consoles ever but it was overlooked and underrated by many in its prime.

I still own a Dreamcast and I've played the hell out of some shmups and such over the years on it, but generally nowadays I only take it out when my friend comes over so he can play that dumb Jojo game of his....he even made a topic about it here :) real talk tho visually that game looks stunning, I just suck at FGs.

Here's the thing, ok don't get me wrong, I love the Dreamcast.
I single handedly promoted the Dreamcast in Macedonia in a magazine I worked for
I was THE only person in my entire country to REVIEW games for the Dreamcast back then.

But after Dreamcast lost most of its exclusives to multi platform releases it just kinda became obsolete. For example if I want to play Batsugun on CRT or Battle Garegaa on CRT my only choice outside of emulation is my SEGA Saturn.
If I want to play Psyvariar 2 on the other hand, I can either do it on DC or PS2...and the PS2 version has superior gameplay mechanics with the auto roll.

Many tho not all shmups moved to PS2, the system was too focused on one on one fighting games and while there are still exclusives that remain on the DC I feel it's not that relevant for me to always have a Dreamcast out anymore.

Canon Spike? Sure, it's a lovely game but ultimately kinda visually bland and not very exciting for me personally. It's not a game I absolutely must keep coming back to.
Bangai-O is phenomenal, but I'd rather play it on emulators with a dual analog controller.

The Sonic Adventures are jank, we're not even looking at those....and I gave SA2 10/10 back in the day at that magazine, jesus....

The system has far too many arena fighters, Spawn, Heavy Metal or whatever it was called, Outtrigger...

It's just a different era of arcade games
no 2d beat em ups, honestly Dynamite Cop 2/Dynamite Deka and Zombie Revenge are ok but they're not as punchy or refined as my favorite 2d beat em ups for me to keep coming back to.

I dunno I'd rather go back to the Saturn, Mega Drive I play a ton than the Dreamcast.
That's not to say I don't play it if I have multiplatform games I own on that but not other systems and want to experience them on CRT like Trizeal, Under Defeat, Zero Gunner 2 and Triggerheart Exelica (tho i own these on Switch but it's emulation). So I STILL play it, I just don't feel it's that important as a console anymore.

I love many games on the DC, but they're not the type I'd replay all the time.

On the other hand those that I would, its arcade roster is either also on PS2 or Xbox and GameCube, that or it's all fighting games and arenas and I don't care about fighting games and arenas.

Cosmic Smash is still a great exclusive but how often do I feel like playing a game like that, tho it's a ton of fun when i'm in the mood for it.

Definitely wouldn't call it underrated but I still got my Dreamcast I've had it for about 15 years now still works fine but it needs a new battery and I need to figure out why my Joystick feels like it's full of dried cum

I love my Dreamcast! I've recently rediscovered it when I started going to my local game store, and they have Japanese DC games for pennies on the dollar. I picked up a bunch of VNs and I've been going through them. It's a good way to brush up on my Japanese a bit.

The collection is small at the moment but it's destined to grow.
