Pokemon was one of those animes that was huge Hit in the U.S during its airing on Kids WB a long time ago, But anyways since this is 4kids first anime dub, how well did they handled this show, because me personally the Voice cast is really good(R.I.P Racheal Lillis), and this is one of the only 4kids anime that kept the OST, But there is censorship but i can't really recall much i think besides those cuts where Misty slapped Ash in one of those early episodes.

I may have watched some episodes in the early 2000's but it's been too long and I don't remember which episodes they were but I remember this image of Brock calling rice balls jelly doughnuts.

This Line still gets me to this day 😂 : r/pokemonanime

Not great but then again it was Pokémon, they could've fumbled it entirely and it still would've had every 90s kid glued to their TVs every single Saturday morning.

Sincerely,
A 90s kid

At least they didn't remove the various guns from Pokemons first Season.

Looking at you Yu-Gi-Oh.

I jest, but Pokemon's dub is serviceable and they certainly put in the work when it came to the films.
Censorship of MewTwo's origin aside all the later films seemed faithful from a casual fans memory.

A lot of people hate on 4kids & DiC because they never improved.
Where Saban (it's last dying breath) gave us a truly brilliant broadcast of Digimon Tamers, entirely because Steve Blum himself, unpaid I may add took over translation duties. Aaaand Fox kids was on life support.
There was nooooo oversite to enforce censorship.
Witnessing something outstanding at the very end of a studios existence makes it easier to overlook the decade+ of bad decisions that came before.

4kids never gave us a translation of equal quality to Saban/Tamers, just localisations that always censored something right up until its death in 2017

Can't say much for the english voices but the 4Kids version was the basis for the brazilian dub, so the text is pretty much the same.

For all it's faults, I can say that their handling of the music was pretty neat.

2.B.A. Master has some bangers (the music had portuguese versions) and Lugia's song on the second movie is a masterpiece (the japanese original is completly different).

The only contact with the english voicecast I had was while playing Valkyrie Profile. Many Pokemon voice actors also worked on VP. Most notably Jessie's VA played Mystina and Meowth's VA played Lezard.

Jessie's voice on Mystina fits her but I can't take Lezard seriously while having the dorkiest, nerdiest voice possible.

it's up there among their best work. i was reacquainted with it back when TwitchPresents did a marathon stream and more recently through PlutoTV which has a channel constantly playing Kanto, Orange Islands and Johto. This and Yu-Gi-Oh/GX are probably the best they ever were, with everything else being kind of embarassing. Gotta give it all to the actors, though. These shows weren't successes thanks to Al Khan, with many of the talent actively despising him.

Jessie's voice on Mystina fits her but I can't take Lezard seriously while having the dorkiest, nerdiest voice possible.

Maddie did a good job with Arngrim, too. She was good at the nerd voice so Lezard getting that treatment is funny.

I'll be honest, I've actually never seen the original Japanese version (aside from a clip from that infamous episode where James has... inflatable breasts).

Despite the censorship, I unironically like the English dub for the Pokemon anime. Although I grew up with Sarah Natochenny's portrayal of Ash from "Diamond & Pearl" onward, I think Veronica Taylor was just as good.

I absolutely love the English Dub. Did it have some stumbles along the way? (Yes It did, this is 4kids after all).
I think that this one was the one where they put in most work into. Jelly-filled Shaped Donuts asides.
I still unironically sing the Indigo League opening without any shame whatsoever.
There is a less censorship to get a away with than with Yu-Gi-Oh (Which is very blatant especially in Duelist Kingdom and Battle City.) despite the uniquely Japanese aspects of Pokemon in the beginning of the Franchise.
Love it but will acknowledged that it is flawed.

It’s not perfect but not bad either. They did a great job if you ask me, unlike how Saban butchered those animes they dubbed.

It's not bad from a technical standpoint (they even escaped some Japanese puns quite gracefully), but the cultural suppression for no reason was disgusting to say the least.

Hard Question to answer, guess I'll put it like this the dub has merits of its own the vocal performances are well done and iconic. it isn't terrible i feel dubs tend to go both ways for these kinds of things you can have your preference but don't feel afraid to check out the sub if your only familiar with the dub and vice versa and you might find something to appreciate

missed my chance to edit this, i should have said "These shows were successful no thanks to Al Khan"
realized my phrasing could be misinterpreted, there's no question they were successful shows.
