I REALLLLY want to play Silent Hill 2 (Yes I know I can emulate it but I want to play it on my PS2/Xbox, and I still don't have wifi for my apartment yet)

I just learned about Silent Hill 2: Restless Dreams for the Xbox and saw that it was significantly cheaper, I am wondering what the differences are between the two versions if there are any. Would it be best to get it since it is the cheaper one or are there any significant problems with that version that hinder the experience? Any answers and discussion about this and SH2 is highly appreciated!

The Xbox version has an additional scenario over the original PS2 release.
The PS2 version got the extra scenario later when it re-released with the Greatest Hits version.

Xbox version has lower quality audio (including some audio bugs like skipping and improper looping) and lower framerate for FMVs (30FPS vs PS2s 60FPS).
Fog effects are also reduced on Xbox but has better flashlight lighting over the PS2 version.

The PS2 ver. was the first one developed and has utilized the console greatly through the fog effect alone along with 60fps FMVs...while the game is at 30fps. (People do say that this is part of the weirdness charm, but in a good way. Don't take my word for it though.)

The OG Xbox ver. is a port and the fog effect mirror this, along with lower bitrate, 30fps FMVs.
Though, the flashlight coverage was made better and there are some more surround sound options but its effects three scenes.
Also, some sound FXs are either at a lower volume, are pitched differently or are of both.

The videos in Silent Hill 2 are not actually 60fps on PS2. They are duplicated through hardware to seem they are 60fps, but in reality it's interlaced frames, so the real framerate for the videos is 30, same as xbox.

Besides the audio glitches on Xbox, both are more or less the same.

So I probably should wait until someone trades in a copy of the PS2 game into the store I work for so I can use my store credit? Then again I am looking for more games for my Xbox...

the original PS2 version has better fog effect and sound quality.
the XBOX has better lightning effects and additional scenario. (but this scenario is also in the greatest hits version of PS2)
i say wait until you can buy the greatest hits version from someone.
however tho, if you ever wanted to emulate it, just go for the PS2 version.

Just play man. Imo you should play whatever version you can. The essence remains, even if it’s not the best one. I played the HD collection and despite the criticism, I still enjoyed it.

No, there is not. The OP stated only Xbox or PS2 specifically.

Honestly, why can't you just download the game, apply freeDVDBoot and burn the DVD to enjoy the full experience without paying more than 30 cents for the disk? If you don't have a DVD burner around you could use other methods, and you would still play it natively, while you wait for a person that wants to sell it.

Waiting for someone to take the game to your store while you want to play it makes no sense when it's so easy to fix it.

Yeah while I was watching the thread I noticed that I probably should just get a freemcboot memory card anyways because I intend on playing the other SH games and Fatal Frame and ik that lasers don't last forever, so it would probably be the better investment than waiting for a chance to buy the game from a trade in.

Don't get me wrong, I encourage you buy the game if you really like it, even if you finish it that's something worth doing. But meanwhile, you can play it. Take it as a long demo ::winkfelix

Maybe I can make a custom case for it too, gives me a little art project to work on
