Significant Xbox layoffs imminent, perhaps another studio closure as well

It is actually kind of wild how since 2020 when the pandemic happened all of the awful things about these markets and industries went from slowly getting bad to becoming absolutely abysmal at the speed of light. The past decade or so has been almost nothing but bad news, but the past 6 years have truly been just the worst.

It was planned, no conspiracy they told us they were going to do it and they are doing it.

I have forgotten about that. Although to be fair, I was like nine and didn't know about that console reveal. So let me emend that statement.

Ever since November 4, 2010, when the Kinect was released, the Xbox has been in a downward spiral.
Dang 9. I was 16 when they announced the WiiU and then a year after PS4-Xbone @E3.
Time sure flies

Microsoft, Phil Spencer and Sarah Bond destroyed Xbox, after Don Mattick terrible leadership, and Xbox never recovered.

Honestly I think it's just a matter of time until Xbox either is hollowed out, sold off or shut down. Microsoft doesn't give enough leeway to Xbox to recover naturally as a consumer brand.

RIP ID Software, I know that it's mainly the engine coders who were removed, but those are the most important people in the company.
The silver lining here is that Carmack isn't impacted by this, but I don't know how good of a thing that is when he's just working on AGI now..

Can't say I care all that much. If Xbox goes down, I'll just move on, I feel no loyalty to any company. That the layoffs hit some people like the guy who kept working on Quake Champions really sucks but on the other hand I hope that they were able to cut off a lot of excess bloat.

Something needed to happen. Phil Spencer's leadership was a failure. He bet on Game Pass, acquired studios to provide AA Game Pass "filler," and that bet didn't pay off. The Series consoles are in a distant third place, and Game Pass has been stuck at around 30 million (they were projecting around 70 million).

Ultimately, the masses want new Fallout and Elder Scrolls games, not Avowed, The Outer Worlds 2, another Hellblade, South of Midnight, and a pottery brawler named Kiln. We haven't had a new Elder Scrolls since 2011 or a new Fallout since 2015. They should've had a new Fallout release around the Amazon series to capitalize on its success. Obsidian should've been working on a new Fallout game, not Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2. That game would've massively outperformed both of them combined. Waiting for Todd Howard to finish Starfield to start on Elder Scrolls VI, and then waiting for him to finish Elder Scrolls VI to start on Fallout 5, was crazy. Todd Howard can offer oversight like he did on Indiana Jones, however these don't need to be his projects. Asha is talking about making more of the games that people actually want and less of the games that they don't want. If you're one of the few people who liked the AA Game Pass "filler" they put out, you'll be disappointed. But if you're one of the people who have been waiting over 10 years for games in their key franchises, hopefully this new leadership can follow through on their vision to get the big hitters out in a more timely manner.

That's a gut punch.

But it's been a trail of dead bodies for decades now... and it sucks so badly.

Why does a studio like Id Software, with a very good track record, had to be reduced to a support studio? Then again, Hi-Fi Rush was successful and Tango was still let go anyways. I'll never understand Xbox upper managment's logic.

Kind of crazy that after having such a well received summer games showcase for Xbox, Microsoft has seemingly decided to follow up by shooting each of its toes off one by one.

They're probably trying to tighten their belts after they wasted so much money on AI.
Anyone who claims GenAI would help the game industry need to see whats happening right now and learn why they were completely wrong

It was a success, but it wasn't as successful in monetary terms as Fortnite. This is the same thing that happens in the world of platform-tv series, if you're not the new Game of Thrones or the new Breaking Bad, it doesn't matter how successful your show is because you're shit to the shareholders and don't deserve a new season.

Didn't help that they released the latest doom on the game pass which probably resulted in a lot of lost sales

I've always said that was THE dumbest decision they've (Xbox) ever made as a collective. WHY would you put a blockbuster as a DAY ONE in a subscription service like that?

Why even sell games at this point if all you want is that sweet sweet low-stakes credit card money every month?

Unfortunately that mentality is what's going to kill any creativity in big AAA studios, if we want any sort of actually interesting games moving forward then indies are our only hope it seems

It's probably not the biggest, but I'd imagine this whole "pivot to game pass" strategy has to be one of the bigger blunders in corporate history.

Only half...wow Microsoft is losing their minds. Usually they just shut down everything that actually makes them money. One day Microsoft will have to close down too...I wish, but evel never disappear quickly.
