Significant gaming memories made in adulthood

I really love DayZ, every time I play it I get a different story to tell. There's no other game like it despite the hundreds of clones that popped up after its success.
The gunshots sound so real, the adrenaline rush you get from the game isn't something that can easily be explained, it can be really scary at times. You never truly know what you're going to encounter and the stakes seem high since one bullet can erase hours or even days of progress.
I remember one time I shared a fish with a Russian guy early on in my life. Then being ambushed by an 8 man group when drinking water from a fountain about an hour later, one of them recognised me when I spoke and it turned out to be the guy I shared fish with earlier. He asked me to join the group so I did. There were 8 Russians and Ukrainians, they were all randoms (not teamed up on discord or anything) and I was the only English speaker so they made special care to translate things for me.
We travelled around Livonia for the whole night, it was one of my first times playing on that map so it was all new to me. We got into a few gunfights early on and there were other obstacles that meant that as the hours went on, our numbers gradually dwindled. About 6 hours in, there were only 3 of us: me, a Russian and a Ukrainian. We hadn't seen another player in hours. We found a large military base from following a distant gunshot sound and we decided to explore it since we had somewhat decent weapons at this point in our run. As soon as we walked in we started taking fire from behind a wall, a guy with full armour and a skull balaclava was spraying at us with an m4 (really high tier gun). The Russian guy got hit and died unfortunately and the Ukranian and I sprinted for a small storage shed to take cover. We locked ourselves in and discovered there was already a dead body in the shed, we divided the equipment on the body amongst ourselves and prepared for a fight. It didn't take long for someone to come up to the windows and start shooting into the building, I managed to hit him in the chest with my m16 which only knocked him out since he was wearing a plate carrier. My Ukranian friend ran outside and finished him off but he wasn't the original shooter with the skull balaclava. A few close sniper shots told us that there was another shooter out there so we hunkered back down in the shed. We knew we were surrounded by a squad and we were very low on ammo for our rifles. After waiting in the shed for about half an hour and hearing nothing I elected to try and get some ammo off the guy we just killed, I ran outside and lied down in the grass next to his corpse and that's when my screen went black, the sniper was watching the whole time.
I ended up adding the final Ukrainian guy on steam after the whole ordeal but haven't played with him since, the random unexpected team-ups are always more interesting than the pre-planned ones.

Elden Ring came out the day that I quit my job (unintentional timing i assure you).
I hyperfixated on that game like a mf. Lead to many emotional moments, soaking the lore and storytelling in when it was fresh and everyone was still theorizing shit waiting for the Vaati spoonfeed. the stories are so grim.

but the moment that left the lasting impression on me was very mundane.
it was when you first get teleported to Farum Azula, the atmosphere is so thicc and the music appropriately sombre and contemplative. really make your hairs stand on end sort of an atmosphere. cold, harsh, turbulent, whirlwinds of dragons in the distance. the atmosphere was so thicc and i was so immersed then i checked this message amidst the beatiful chaos:

i completely lost my shit at how hilarious and childlike whimsy this message was contrasted with the gravity of the situation LUL

In the last 10 years or so, I've been blessed enough to play through some of my favourite games with my favourite people. We would haul our consoles and even our TV's round to each other's places and have a 3 TV/console set up and just burn through days and copious amounts of green whilst playing games together. The best of which were:

- DOOM 2016 Multiplayer. Great community, arenas and modes of play
- 3 full playthroughs of Dark Souls III to all get the platinum together. When we first arrived at Lothric together, we were invaded by a guy named "AyyyIt'sMr.J" who dressed his character like the Joker and proceeded to beat us all to death with his bare fists (he and I killed each other with our final blows). That set the tone for the rest of the run.
- Death Stranding played through from release day
- Persona 5 played through from release day
- Persona 4, which we played through together in 2011 for the first time, almost exactly to the month when the game is set.

I'm so lucky to have those guys in my life. They rarely have time to play anymore, none of us still smoke and we're all busier than ever, but we still find time to catch up here and there.
