This is kind of objective, but remakes are always nice. But, if there's anything I disliked, it's 2d to 3d remake. It doesn't have the same charm to 2d pixel graphics. Example : apollo justice.
They done them dirty on the 3d model istg

If they want a Remake, they better do an actual Remake and not just a HD Graphical Update and call it a Remake. Bring something new to the industry while still respecting what the original game did.

There're too many games that came up short of being good regardless of the era while still being memorable and have a place in some community after years of release. Those games are great targets for remake and with extra features added in would really be potential to get newcomers joining in and not just a blatant cashgrab for nostalgia fans.

Yeah, so long as its like this one.

I refuse to call this game a "remaster"
That is a disservice to the masterpiece that it is. Oh RE 2002, you were wayyyy too ahead of your time...
The sole reason I begged for a GameCube for Christmas 2002, seriously I only wanted one for this game haha.

It really depends. The Metroid Prime remaster was gorgeous. They didn't just slap new textures on the old assets. They redid the entire thing, and it paid off.

I think Morrowind needed a remaster/remake before Oblivion did. Oblivion is still able to reach newer audiences, whereas Morrowind is pretty janky and tends to scare off possible new fans. The Oblivion remake does open up a world of possibilities for modding since the new engine can handle a whole lot more.

I'm not a fan of the FFVII remake. I feel it strays too far from the original. It's cool to see everyone in new graphics and engine, but past that it feels more like fanservice than anything.

Star Ocean First Departure and Second Story had really nice remasters/remakes that made the older games more accessible to newer audiences. It made it a lot easier for me to play through them my first time.

So again, I guess it depends. If a game is super old and could use an update, then I can see why using modern tech to update it can be a blessing, but a lot of times I think 'newer' titles really don't need that extra attention. At least not yet.

Yes , we have all this new technology we can make games look and play better than ever we can program things better than before.

Basically everything is better now when it comes to technology why keep an old piece of junk the way it is when you can update it making it way more accessible? I would like a remake for 2d final fantasy games that actually utilizes modern technology to show us these vast worlds restricted by technology of the time , just imagine how would the siege of doma in FF6 look like? Or the battle of fynn in FF2? way more epic way more fun!

Best example ever when it comes to re-released games has to be age of empires 2 definitive edition not only does it updates graphics it adds new content and updates old ones just look at the new chinese DLC...

we are in an era where companies are creatively bankrupt so from a business prespective getting audience hyped with old beloved games works better when you just add some stuff of course when done correctly you win like stronghold remaster or AOE2 remaster or age of mythology remake called retold.

As usual, I cant but find it funny to read so many people here on the CDRomance forum, who seems OK with all that modern nonsense, online stores, remasters, AAA studios...

We know why we are here and it's not because we're satisified with today's offer. XD

If I'm genuinely interested in a game, why would I buy some AI upscaled version of it, just because they put copyright on 30 years old game that should have gone public. The same companies who have now fed their AI models with anything they could torrent... They're showing the way really... XD

These cashgrabs appeal to the FOMO and nostalgia of impulse buyers. The vast majority wont even bother finishing these games. Most wont even bother *playing* or *installing* them. It's true for most games in general, but I think it's even more prevalent with remakes and remasters and their target market.
Nah? Not everything is done by AI nowdays man....also is RE1 remake done by AI? i literally installed it and played a bit but deleted it cuz it was heavy on my device and from the few minutes i played it brought a janky clunky game from 1996 to an excellent pretty good looking and nicely detailed game just look at the dinning room it has more details than all 3 PS1 RE games combined lol.

The original release can be flawed why stick with it? Why stick to something bad when you can fix it? It's not because i hate the game that i want it remade it's cuz i want it to be it's ultimate form it's best version ever!

Reminds me of purists man...

only in instances where the original game is horribly unplayable because of outdated control schemes (kings field games are a good example) otherwise those resources, time and money could be going towards making new games or sequels set in the same universe.
it's cool to see old games look pretty but I don't care about (bad) graphix anyway so it's a waste imo ::cirnoshrug

there are good remakes but there are more bad ones that just destroye the original games
i hate when they change the battle system in remakes
so many original rpg game is turn based but they remove the turn based in the remake that is just destroying the original game

they censored the remake and remove contens from the game

i am not for or against remake its just that in my experience most remake are bad since they remove content in the game or they change the battle system to mutch

@rugal I totally agree, i understand that a remake is not obliged to be faithful but neither is it obliged to move away from it, for me at the moment you change the genre of the game or the gameplay you already moved too far away, the ideal for me is what Capcom did with the remake of the first RE, improved what was already in the original and added QoL.

The answer is "when"

Remakes no longer represent an opportunity to "Re-iterate" and make what was good even better, but it is made to test out new engines or paying schemes attached to a already proven IP.

That's not really a yes or no answer, as it depends on the game. I don't mind remakes as long as they don't replace the original, though I generally prefer when it's a flawed game being remade instead of a perfectly fine game.

where are you getting testing from? that's a waste of money and resources these days dev and publishers wont justify, even back in the day it was rare to just publish a game to test engines (Parasite Eve not withstanding). The reasons are the same as with the film companies, reselling people IPs they're familiar with than risking it with new ideas (like Concord and other notable flops proved)

It depends. What is the purpose? I am behind any remake that doesn't change what made the game special in the first place (unless it was special because it sucked). Having the director or original development team re create the game and expand upon it now because of technical advancements is a great thing. Some of the stories are too good to not be told more than once or twice 30 years ago.

Testing comes from the usage of said engines to power other releases, example. FF7 remake.

it can not fail even if they tried; then use the tech to power FF16.

And again, they will use this on already proven IP's, just as I implied and you yourself mentioned on your comment.

I never said they will risk doing something new or test something new IF they already knew they will profit from it.

I picked other for one very specific reason.
Remakes are fine, as long as they are just remakes, i look at wild arms alter code F, besides the bad western version (due to the publisher half assing it), the game is actually probably the best version of wild arms 1, if it was done right.
Then i look at final fantasy 7 remake, which is imo a "nomuraized" version of final fantasy 7 with a ton of story changes making it a entirely different game, that's not a remake, that's a reimagining and i DO NOT support reimagining.
