I recently opened my xbox to change my hard drive and so when i opened it i checked capacitors which all seemend in good condition no bulges no stains is this possible? I think my xbox was kept somewere in an attic all saves are from early 2000 dust caked onto the hole console especially i the groves in the case which i still can't clean. It is a 1.6. Any info would be great thanks:) ::thumbsupwario

Do original Xboxs typically have capacitor problems?
I know the console is over twenty years old now, but I thought capacitors typically last a decade or two longer than that.

If you have time replace it with modern solid states or metalized ones.
Remember test the new first with voltages to their max rated voltage, as nowadays quality sucks.

Otherwise dont fix if not broken!

Yes they usually do they burst and spill on the motherboard. Its a bit scary thinking that your cosole can break any minute::bonzistares

I got one that i bought used and never changed the caps except for the clock one, it wasnt leaking, but it will eventually leak and ruin your console. From my experience and knowledge the clock capacitor its a must to be changed, it will for sure leak and it always leaks over some circuits that pass near the edge of the board and the console wont turn on or function properly. Up to version 1.4 if you have a modded system, you dont even need to replace the cap, just remove it, you can set time and date via network. Versions 1.6 needed the cap to boot, but i believe i read somewhere that there is a small fix that will allow you to remove the clock cap and dont need to replace it.

Thanks i will look into the clock one.

If you can and have the means, then it’s worth it. As the post above me has said: XBox originals are time bombs.

The clock capacitor is the real beast. Known for killing units, they’re a high priority to remove all together.

Everything is a time bomb and 20+ years is a lot for caps or electronics in general. It might work for now but it might also blow up tomorrow. The chance is 50/50. Such is life. In general. ::biggrin
