So, it's Christmas and I received some money from my parents to spend on some games. For a while now I've had an interest in the Valkyria Chronicles series, drawn to the art style and gameplay which sets it apart from most JRPGs. So, for those who played Valkyria Chronicles 1 or 4 on the Switch (or another console/PC), which one should I buy for a good experience and introduction to the franchise?

Without knowing much about the history of this series, I'd have to imagine a good introduction would be the beginning

Go with the first as the 4th one does reference the original a bit.
I would play the psp titles too!
3 is my favourite in the series.

VC 4 has better gameplay, but the gameplay of the first game still holds up well.

VC 4's story is absolute garbage with two obnoxious leads (Riley in particular) that just drag everything down.

Overall, VC 1 is the better game and a genuine classic.

Dude, spoilers ::winkfelix

I don't consider anything I said there a spoiler, I just think people should know that VC 4 doesn't have a good story before they decide to play it. Personally, if I could go back in time and NOT play it I would.

i dont necessarily care if you buy them for the Switch, but I totally recommend buying every Valkyria Chronicles game (including the rpg a lot of fans hate, Valkyria Revolution).. oh and an older game made by Success (the Cotton guys) called Operation Darkness.. all of them are a damn good time

Having played both (VC 1 multiple times), I gotta say

VC 1 still holds up surprisingly well for today's standards but 4 has way more features

1 has a nice story and characters are very likeable and charismatic. It suffers from "fist game syndrome" tho. Scouts are way overpowerd in the end game and having to use 2 command points for your tank is kinda bad. Still, its a classic and a very fun game.

4 was an overall upgrade mechanicwise and has a ton of features on normal playthrough and post game. The main story is good but the maincast can be a bit boring sometimes. It has way more content than 1.

Both are good but if you have to choose one, you should:

Choose 1 if you want a fun game, but don't really want to spend a lot of time.

Choose 4 if you want a lot of content and is willing to play for quite some time.
