Shogo: Mobile Armor Division is a FPS developed by Monolith Productions and published by Monolith and Interplay Entertainment in 1998.

Combat with anime-style bipedal mechs that features the possibility of critical hits, whereby attacking an enemy will occasionally bring about a health bonus for the player.

Take on the role of Sanjuro Makabe, a Mobile Combat Armor (MCA) pilot and a commander in the United Corporate Authority (UCA) army, during a brutal war for the planet Cronus and its precious liquid reactant, kato you must locate and assassinate a rebel leader known only as Gabriel.

At two pivotal points in the game, the player also has the opportunity to make a crucial decision, which can alter the game's ending.

The canceled expansion pack Shugotenshi would have given more insight into Kura's roles. It would have been six or eight levels of Kura fighting and coming to terms with the death of Hank. Some features of that game would have been various body armor for Kura and new enemies and weapons for her.

Oh man, Monolith's early 3D era. I remember enjoying the mech sections in Shogo a lot, but I also remember how nightmarish the on foot segments were.

Shogo's critical hit system worked both ways, in that an enemy could randomly crit the player for massive damage or a one-shot. This critical chance was applied to every individual hitscan from a shotgun, meaning that enemies with shottys were particularly lethal. Combine this with the lightning reaction speeds of Monolith FPS hitscanner's, and you'll be leaning on that quick save button.

Still a good game, MILES better than Blood 2.

Shogo was value packed on CD with Septerra Core: Legacy of the Creator. Both published by Monolith Productions.

I had been spoiled by more polished games (Deus Ex) and did not play far into Shogo. The technology was moving rapidly from Windows 95, to 98, then XP.

I love Shogo(in all it's jankyness and the whole Western anime aesthetic). One funny thing I can mention it was my first exposure to Ghost in the shell and Tokimeki Memorial(In game you find posters).

God I love this game, I would kill for remake or a sequel. Sure the game has it's flaws but It was still enjoyable!

This game desperately needs a remaster (done by Night Dive). I bought this on steam a while ago and immediately I ran into a shit ton of issues. Slowdown, broken ui, choppy audio, etc etc. I really wanna play this because it looks to be exactly what I would love, but boy, does it not want me to play it.

A great game, a bit unfair with the crit system at times but it was that era of twitch reflex FPS games.
The two things I remember from that game was the old lady looking for her cat and the cat.

monolith likes their anime, another game by them, F.E.A.R., also has a story like it's been taken from animanga, but it is not so inspired by masamune shirow

i like how caleb from blood has a cameo on a magazine cover in the screenshot the op posted

another user mentioned septerra core, by bungie, bungie also made O.N.I. an anime-inspired game with anime cutscenes. this late 90s and early 2000s fusion of japanese and american pop-culture stuff was so cool, i wish it lasted longer

One of my favourite FPS Campaigns but man is it broken.
I love this the same way I love Jurassic Park Trespasser. Its potential can be seen in every texture, animation and moment of gameplay- right up until you randomly die or the AI Breaks.

Its beyond my normal Jank tolerances but as a relic of the Anime community before the medium it hit mainstream televised distribution in the 2000nds or the dawn of streaming its a holy relic which should be revered!

... Yeah Oni did the "Anime Fanfiction game" better but comparing a Monolith studios who had just been fncked over whilst developing Blood 2 to Bungie in their prime?
SHOGO being as good as is was a low key miracle
There is also Slave: Zero but almost no one cares about it

Honestly this captures what I was thinking when I saw this thread. Back then I was a teen and thought American interpretations of anime were cheesy and lame, but now I look on them fondly and appreciate them. I almost beat Septerra Core in college and I kinda wanna try again (if I can get it running with all the QOL mods).

That's too bad, I was wanting to try it after knowing about it so long, too.

Is there a better version of the game, or fan-made patches/guides to make it work OK on modern systems?
Saw it was on GOG as well, but some reviews also comment on it being a pain to set up these days...

The game is janky but it had a lot of ideas that were honestly innovative.
