Genesis SHMUP 4 BEGINNERS

I have recently obtained a Sega Genesis, a CRT and a MEGA Everdrive Pro. Growing up, the Genesis was my favorite/most played console but I was not into SHMUPS at all, as I found them just way too difficult. However, I have recently grown an affinity for the SHMUP genre but I'm just as terrible now at 40 years old as I was 30 years ago. Looking for "beginner" or "friendly" SHMUP recommendations on the Genesis or Sega CD that will help me learn basic SHMUP mechanics without torturing me lol. Thanks Everyone!
Arrow Flash! It's simplistic, short, easy to get the hang of and has some built-in cheats that can give you a light headstart in the first few stages.

MUSHA/Full metal fighter Ellinor(what a dumb name lol, I'm just picturing whitey from eight crazy nights piloting a mech) Is also super accessible and forgiving on top of also being very simplistic, while not skipping out in having some of the most insane music and visual design on the system!

Insector X is a good introduction to "trial and error" shoot em ups, having checkpoints and levels that while simplistic, encourage you to learn enemy and obstacle patterns so you can overcome the stages quicker and quicker on subsequent playthroughs, and on the continue screen all you need to do is press up-left on the dpad and c and you get an extra continue, and afaik this works every time you game over so like Musha, it's also a very forgiving experience!

Bari-Arm is the best shmup on the sega cd imo, as it not only has amazing graphics and music, but also has very chill easy-to-get-the-hang-of gameplay, and moreso than any other previous game has AN INSANE ammount of cheats and accessibility trinkets to mess around with!

First shmup I ever beat was Steel Empire. Use the blimp.

This might not be a Sega Game but if you specifically want a console game to get good with (I could mention some PC games that might be more efficient with tutorials and practice features) one of the best starters is Blazing Lazers for the TurboGrafx. You can watch a video by this one youtuber SHMUP JUNKIE who explains how to play it as a great lesson plan. I even play it again when I'm looking to get a refresher between breaks from the genre.

Thunder Force III might be the easiest shooting game I've ever played, the HAIDES level is a bit annoying though until you memorize it.

Battlemania Daiginjou is also a great shooting game, and it has a few options if you find normal mode too hard.

I recommend Silpheed for MegaCD, its worth every byte of the 500MB dump.

As it was a SHMUP directly developed for consoles its a bit more forgiving at one-hit death as you have a 10+2 shield (recoverable every level) and some recovery pick-ups during levels. Also, you have 5 continues from the last level, but the option appears when going back to main menu...
Maybe its fast paced in comparison to others shmups, but this is what you came to learn, didnt you?... Enemies-waves pattern are eye-blink predictible and they shoot you once they go off-screen, and do not think that you can ignore the FMV background as it might be collisionable.

The weapon upgrade score system is based on the proximity you kill an enemy. Take a rest at the end of the level while watching the astounding intermission movies.

When it comes to shooters on the MD/Gen there are some obvious choices that everyone likes to recommend: the Thunder Force games, M.u.s.h.a., Gaiares.

Here’s a few games I like that tend to slip through the cracks.

Fire Shark
Super Fantasy Zone
Arrow Flash
Sub Terrania

M.U.S.H.A. and Thunder Force IV are considered the most technically impressive on Genesis. For an easier shmup with quality I would recommend Fire Shark. Also if you can try Truxton, it's a PAL exclusive though.

Truxton had a US release. It was called Tatsujin in Japan. I don't think there are really any easy shumps on the Genesis. All anyone can recommend are good ones. Another of my favorites is Elemental Master. Since OP is using an everdrive check out Gleylancer also.

Lords of Thunder for Sega CD would be great for a beginner.
The PC engine version is known for being more technical, but for the Sega CD the difficulty was decreased.

While I do enjoy shmups I'm terrible at them; however, I was able to beat Lords of Thunder, so I think you have a good shot at this one. It has a great soundtrack too. You'll love it.

Someone else also mentioned Android Assault: Revenge of Bari-Arm. I can second this one. The soundtrack also kicks ass.

Maybe they're not talked about as much, but I think there's definitely easy shmups out there. I've played a bit of the Aleste series by Compile and those games are pretty forgiving. It looks like there's an installment for the genesis called Musha Aleste and one for the sega CD called Robo Aleste but I haven't played those much.
The Aleste / Zanac series (and pretty much most Compile shmups) I would say are a great gateway.
Depending on temperament might be worth OP avoiding the likes of Aleste 1 or Zanac first.

If you want a good, classic 80s/90s shmup on SEGA's old 16-bit / 8-bit offerings, MUSHA Aleste is a great choice. It isn't on Mega Drive / Genesis but I'd also recommend the modern Game Gear release "GG Aleste 3" by M2 - fantastic blend of classic shmup gameplay with some nice modernised design, it can be found in the "Aleste Collection" on PS4 and Switch (https://aleste.fandom.com/wiki/Aleste_Collection). M2 are lauded by many STG fans for putting a lot of care in their releases, often with excellent additional features to help you master the game.

More "Modern" shmups or Danmaku / Bullet Hell is a whole other kettle of fish, and you aren't likely to get offerings on the MD/Genesis for it, but I'd recommend Cave's Mushihime-sama or Espgaluda (PS2, Xbox 360, Switch, etc), or indie/doujin offerings like Crimzon Clover or Touhou: Perfect Cherry Blossom. 'Zero Ranger' is also fantastic but I think it would be better for someone with a little bit more experience under their belt.

Another vote for Steel Empire.

I was reading an old mag recently and their review of Steel Empire was basically "Great, but too easy" so would be a greater beginner shooter.

you should definitely try thunderforce iv, it's not easy but it's not too hard either and compared to others i think it's more beginner friendly. and you should also try thunderforce v on ps1 if you can, these two are the best shmups you can play on a console
To be fair, there is the 99 lives trick in thunder force 4/lightening force, hold A and press start brings up the options menu, then set the lives, i think 0 means 99 but it's been years.

Just tested it, it works on the us version of the game at least, though i won't discount it could be a bug and not intended.
QJKSHDKJQSHGADJKAGHSDKSD I TESTED IT ONLY WORKS IN US VERSION LITERALLY WTF

oh wait it also works on eu version they knew the only people who can play shmups are japanese

For those who aren't put off by the artstyle or huge anime boobs, I think Outside Sotonohito's shoot 'em up games are very good at easing beginners of bullet hell type of games with how they approach starting off on the standard mode before tackling on the harder stuff like the complete Trial Mode or the other crazier challenges they have to offer. M.U.S.H.A. on the Genesis is another good pick that I can attest to being able to 1CC the game on Normal mode two loops in when I got it for my Wii via the Virtual Console.
