Came across this interesting concept:

IMG_20260527_181500.jpg

And wonder if you guys had any examples of it.

I don't think I do, because I tend to play everything I buy.

Any (modern) sports game made by EA.
That is basically my friend's collection in a nutshell.

I must admit I was guilty of this about 15 years ago when you could still snag retro games for 2 to 5 bucks a pop, but nowadays I only buy games I intend to play.

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1988), NES.
I have played it, and those tiger electronics wrist games really are better.

Digimon World 2, that game blows, but I already had 1, 3, & 4, so...

I am an example of it. 80% of what I own is sealed and I do not pretend to open it ever.

It is simple to understand, it's a mix of OCD's and keeping everything in perfect condition and ordered. It starts as a hobby, then it feels like when you do 4 rows at once in Tetris everytime you buy a new game and place it carefully among the others.

I understand when people buy a game, open it and play it, that's perfectly normal, but my brain works totally different while I am able to play as well, I don't feel comfortable opening them.

Every game I play, when I have little time, is a copy of a game I own. With Switch is a little bit different, because each cartridge has a unique identifier and playing a backup would be considered illegal, as that backup is not from my own cartridge, so if I really want to play a Switch game I can buy it cheap second hand too.

But do not misunderstand me, it happened all my life with everything. Every year before starting school, I used to have a little budget to buy stuff for school, and when I liked something I kept it sealed without using it because I didn't want it to deteriorate in any way.

I am a person who is paranoid about the condition of things and regarding game I feel very very sad seeing how usually people treat them in western markets. And it is no joke, if I buy something I am not happy with the condition afterwards my head starts to get full of ghosts and I hardly can sleep for days.

And how do you play the games do you buy? You buy a digital copy? Emulation or piracy?

The games I buy I use backup and real hardware, I only emulate when I do not do serious gaming. But I only do that when I am in my country, as Japan has strict laws about that, and even owning the original does not give you the right to reproduce a backup in any way. As second hand is way better, there is no problem about buying second hand games, and their prices are usually way cheaper. Nowadays many games include english language, which is very helpful for hardcore text games.

Oh, so you don't have a issue of that type with second hand games?
Anyways, thanks for answering.

for me those were ff games but only because i really wanted to play them and build a physical collection but i didnt have the time and the energy to do so ... i had a lot of physical copies for ps3 and ps4 but sold them. i only have ffx/x-2 hd remaster and ffxiii left !

oh i am very same in this regard... i wish to keep my merch and games fully sealed in an airtight case one day so that i dont accidentally ruin it. seeing dust accumulate on it makes me already very uncomfortable, if something got somehow damaged i also break down and i feel horrible. i also cant stand the fact that my favorite stuff may get ruined, thats one of the reasons why i dont really buy games/merch, and even if i do buy something i try to either handle it carefully and clean it every day (if its an item of everyday use) or not take it out of the packages as to not stain it/damage it.
all of this is also yet another reason to pirate, but whenever i pirate a game and play it i feel like i ruined the rom by playing it, so i always keep archived original roms on my pc. because what if my rom is tainted and i ruined it? and what if a game i have will suddenly vanish from the internet? not that good for the pc storage though.
using my 3ds also makes me really uncomfortable. im very comfortable with taking tech apart and refurbishing it but using my 3ds just gives me anxiety because i know that the more i use it the more worn out it will get which will eventually lead to it being damaged in a way. seeing scratches and dents just makes me feel off as well, so i keep my 3ds in a case. thats why i emulate, although i could have always played my favorite nds/3ds roms on my actual 3ds.
i was really set on collecting different retro consoles until i realized that id have to buy backup consoles and games if ill ever want to use them exactly because of this so im once again resorting to pirating.

When the game is in totally pristine condition I do not, and that is usually the case when I buy second hand games in Japan. There is a second hand store that has games in the junk section because they have a few scratches but some of them are barely new, just the case has a little dust or moist. I always take a look over there and there are tons of games you can get for 100-200-300jpy. They are perfect for playing them then give them to someone or just recicle them, because it's a good way to help others play games too.

I totally understand you. I am happy to see more people taking care of things this much :)

I can't think of any, personally. Because of my own stubborn temperament, I tend to have very clear views on what is worth having and not, so I only consider things I know I will enjoy.

From time to time, I have run across games that were super cheap, Like 50 cents, 1 Dollar and that I didn't own. I bought them simply because I thought I would play them later. However after some years, I have yet to even take the shrink wrap off of most of them. I probably have around 20 maybe 30 games like this. However, they weren't purchased for that intended purpose, that's just what they have become.

Unrelated but I can't see this image without thinking of FamiDaily

hey wait a second...

I think the closest thing to this, for me, came from the several "lots" that I've bought off of eBay over the years. I would buy said "lots" with the express intention of acquiring certain games for a bargain, but of course a number of other games would be included too. For example, with maybe two or three exceptions, nearly every sports game that I physically own entered my collection in this way..

I definitely have a few. It usually is something that I either thought I'd like, or maybe a game that I thought would be funny to own.

My favorite shelf filler is Patriotic Pinball.
