Shantae and Asha: Dream Fantasia is an Open World 2D Platformer that blends action, RPG, puzzle, and adventure elements into one. It is a crossover featuring Asha from the 1994 Sega Genesis classic; Monster World IV and Shantae from the 2002 Game Boy Color classic; Shantae.

It is a brand new adventure that serves as Monster World IV-2, a Shantae crossover, and a crossover of other characters; most notably from the action-platform and RPG genres.

After the defeat of the Incarnation of Fear, peace has finally been restored to Monster World once again. One year has passed since then. However, a threat still lurks deep in the shadows. Asha's mother has fallen ill to a rare illness that can only be cured with seven magical ingredients. What starts out as a simple fetch quest to heal a loved one evolves into an adventure in which the very state of dreams is at stake.

  • A challenging, fast-paced 2D action rpg with platform, adventure, and puzzle elements
  • A mix of new, old, and revamped areas
  • A full-fledged, dual arc story with over 100 cut scenes
  • A mostly open world that is scattered across separate, but interconnected zones
  • Enhanced Monster World IV battle system with new twists
  • Over 20 playable characters
  • Learn and equip the abilities of people you meet around the world
  • Over 40 areas full of things to discover and places to explore

  • Multiple side quests and events
  • Simulated gambling
  • Real-time daily effects
  • 30+ hours of content (possibly up to 50+ for completionists)
To play the game simply launch shantae-and-asha.exe. You can change the game to fullscreen by pressing F4.

Note: I had unusual issues of the game just not wanting to work for me at all. I was able to open it one time and then it just never worked again. I kept getting an error saying it stopped unexpectedly before it launches. I was able to fix it by pairing it up with dgVoodoo. You can delete dgVoodoo and related files if you want, (the exe, .conf, and d3d8.dll) but it's there to make this more stable in case my issue was not an isolated one.

AntiMicroX is like a bazillion times better than joy2key. It's got way more features and capabilities than joy2key. Plus it just has a way better ui and app. joy2key is just bare bones basic in comparison. Of course y'all can use whatever app you prefer but imo AntiMicroX is just way better. Just figured I'd suggest it more since everybody seems to be using joy2key, and I always thought that one kind of sucks
never heard of antiMicroX before, looks like it does exactly what joy2key does
looking at the feature list joy2key does all of the same things outside running scripts and executables.
took about 10 seconds to assign all buttons needed for shantae and asha regardless

nope doesn't work
can use joy2key to map it to a gamepad easily though.

I remember finding this on another site a few years ago and I just didn't play it because there was no controller support. Has that changed?

I love fangames and seeing stuff like this. Reminds me of those crazy single person fan games like Mario and Sonic crossovers made in stuff like Game Maker in the mid 2000s. Not all of them played great but the passion was always undeniable.

I already said in that comment you quoted that I tried your file and it didn't fix anything. Where I said edit:

Well actually it was an earlier comment than the one you quoted. That big comment where I quoted you and someone else.

"edit: I tried your .dll and it didn't fix my issue. I can only get the game to run using dgVoodoo. I guess you can probably not use your .dll either. It's probably something on my laptop causing this issue. I might need to run DISM tools to fix my kernelbase dll. If someone else has the errors I described please let me know. It's bugging the hell out of me."
Interesting, I had a similar issue with Pac-Man Adventures in Time, dgvoodoo did not fix the issue (nevermind the complicated setup) but d3dimm fixed the issue, same exact thing happened with this game, perhaps you could add it as an option in the description for those who may have a similar setup like me.

I already shared a better fix earlier, a dll file that is better than dgvoodoo, you can delete dgvoodo.exe (it was reported before to be fake flagged as a malware by some protection software) and replace it with d3dimm.dll instead should fix the problem.

Odd, can you share your os info?
I'm using WinNative (windows emulator for android) to play on portable console Ayn Odin 3.
Oldest windows games (like Bejeweled 2 and 3, Am2r, Outrun 2006 c2c ecc) work perfectly, but this give my that's error. If i try to delete dll files game start, but black and withe screen and no sound.

That's the issue I had with it on mine that I talked about in a previous comment. I was able to fix it by using dgVoodoo. Since that makes the game use dgVoodoo to render the directx from it instead of the game's own thing. I've tried both the latest 2.1.1 version of the game and 2.1 and both versions give that same error if dgVoodoo isn't in the folder. I wish I knew what causes it. I have the latest of directx and Microsoft Visual C++ installed so it can't be that. I've looked around on forums for Game Maker Studio and nobody had a solution that actually worked. It was just dumb luck that I've been able to play it using dgVoodoo. If I hadn't known about that from using it with older Windows games then I would have been screwed and not been able to play it

Game gave me garbled graphics, I used this dll and it fixed the issue, just include it in the game folder, you can delete djvoodoocpl.exe

Would have included the protag of the DS game Monster Tale in this one though! (anyone remember Monster Tale which protag is voiced by the VA who voiced Moxxi from Borderlands and Tiny Tiny Chopper)
She is in this actually. There's like over 20 playable characters and she's one of them. I think she's also on the cover under Shantae's name. The cover image is an edited artwork that XBuster used on the rpgmaker.net blog page for the game to show all the characters that were playable.

it’s mixed up with a lot of character i don’t know, can you explain how much character in there

anyone happen to have a hold of easygamestation's earlier doujin games such as dash de lei-lei or duo princess? they had a number of games before their claim to fame with resettear but i could never get my hands on any of those.

Game don't want start. Any other solution for "error saying it stopped unexpectedly before it launches"? Thanks

Playing this on Steam Deck with GE-Proton 10.34, and is anyone else having an issue where the ambient sounds (waves, wind, etc.) never stop playing even long after you've left whatever area they should be playing in or even just after you've restarted the game through the restart function in-game? If so, does anyone know how to fix it?

Not gonna lie, i first thought that you uploaded this game since is like your "kind" of game.
Anything with Amy on the cover is his kinda game lol. Also I noticed they used an instrumental version of the Kiss Kiss Kiss opening song from Tales of Phantasia when Shantae and Asha rode to Rapadagna on the magic carpet. That was pretty nice. I recognized it instantly

Played this for two hours, it's very solid, high quality, however it seems no native controller support, had to use joy2key, my only nitpick is the game is massive and you can get lost easily, Shantae this ain't, this is a solid hard core 2D adventure experience.
If you run the game in Steam as a non-Steam game and enable Steam Input, you can map the controls in Steam. Works for any game.

This started right up for me on Linux. I used Faugus Launcher with GE-Proton, but I imagine it works in Steam as well if you want controller support. Just added the game, pointed it to the .exe and started it right up with no issue.

Proton is basically magic at this point. It runs old games and weird stuff like this better than Windows nowadays. Amazing.
