I'm wondering how many game sequels felt more like a remake with extra steps than an actual sequel.

I know that old arcade and 8-bits era game series didn't change the formula that much so you feel like you're replaying the same game (with new features).

Akiba's Trip: Undead & Undressed

It was called Akiba's Trip 2 in Japan, but it is by and large a remake of the first Akiba's Trip game.

Dissidia 012 Duodecim is a prequel to the first Dissidia on the PSP while also having the entire first game remade inside it.

Battlemaniacs is basically the same as Battletoads, but shorter, a bit easier, and with way better graphics and music. I guess the one notable change is the toads have their own moves and style now. I never beat Battletoads, but finished this one a few times.

Jet Set Radio Future

For sure! Doesn't even feel like the same UNIVERSE.

I don't even know if it counts, but Lunar: Dragon Song is such a weird, weird installment. It kinda follows on the footsteps of the original two, but then undoes everything in ways that make it feel like an intruder into the series.

Dragon's Dogma II, in more ways than one

Etrian Odyssey II has many story beats of 1 rehashed until the final stratum where the story feels uniquier, gameplaywise the classes are the same regarding themes and they even add some more

Hitman contracts many missions from original hitman remade in it.

The whole red dragon and blue lotus missions.

Traditions of the trade one of the best missions i played in a stealth game , deadly cargo too mini remake was contracts.

i always thought of duodecim as more of an expansion pack. you get the original game, some new content and some quality of life improvements.
but it could also be seen as a remake. never thought of it like that.

-Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty with regards to plot
i'd argue against this one. it was part of the plot for it to feel just similar enough yet just different enough from the first game.

Paper Mario: the thousand year door, kind of. you have the same basic plot structure and the first 2 party members in each are extremely similar, but it expands a lot of the mechanics and stops feeling like that later in the game

Metroid zero mission
Zero Mission was a remake of Metroid I NES. Super Metroid feels like an enhanced remake of the first.

I'll add Left 4 Dead 2 for being very similar to the first with a refined gameplay (and melee weapons).

Wait it does? Shit I didnt know this.
I might have to change some plans
