Send some retro horror recommendations my way!

I just discovered this one myself: Juggernaut for the PSX. It's got some rather campy scenes but the horror tends to focus on the surreal.

 
Would definitely reiterate Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem (Gamecube) as one to check out if it isn't just missing from the list.

Also will point out that SIGNALIS would play great on a CRT.
Maybe I'll try eternal darkness! although i'll say i'm a bit more fond of games where you're more "defenseless", in a way. i don't like them that much when they're combat focused.

Was it just the amount of combat that you didn't like in SIGNALIS?

The atmosphere of that game for me is so strong, I'm a bit surprised if that didn't at least hit some of the vibes you're looking for.

Seeing that you've played D and Enemy Zero, is it safe to assume you also played D2 (Dreamcast)? Lunacy/Torico (Saturn) is also worth checking out, in that same vein.

The earlier Penumbra titles and SOMA from the creators of the Amnesia series also have some pretty oppressive atmospheres, with little to no standard combat.

I forgot about adding penumbra! That's one of my favorite game series, I'm always giddy when i replay them. I'll look into Torico too.

My problem about Signalis comes from a hodgepodge of stuff. I didn't really fw the way the story was presented, it felt like it wanted to pull some ambiguous stuff without doing the full legwork to pull it off. The combat felt a little like the first resident evil where you must shoot the enemies an inordinate amount of times, but without the ways RE had to mitigate that (introducing many better weapons as the game goes on) it just felt like the enemies were bullet sponges, who also tended to wake up extremely fast if you didn't burn their bodies, for which you needed to give up one or two (don't remember) of your extremely limited inventory spaces, needed for carrying like 5000 puzzle relevant items at all times if you didn't want to make a ton of trips to and fro. I just ended ignoring the enemies and running past them completely, it didn't feel good. I'm actually sad I didn't like the game! I had been looking forward to it since before release, but alas.
 
How about out some old FromSoftware games like Echo Night or Kuon? I'm not sure if you tried the first Clock Tower on SNES, but it's also a great horror game.

My problem about Signalis...
Torico isn't horror per se, but definitely eerie and uncanny. It's a very odd game! Sacom made an earlier game for the Sega CD called Mansion of Hidden Souls with a similar ethereal and spooky atmosphere (not to be confused with THE Mansion of Hidden Souls on Saturn, which was actually a very confusingly named sequel)

They also worked on a truly perplexing 3DO game in between called Seal of the Pharaoh, for some context as to what kind of shenanigans were afoot at System Sacom around that time. Same folks that later helped make Deep Fear.

I definitely understand those criticisms of SIGNALIS as well, although I feel like some are intentional choices by the developers, the back and forth can be tedious. I personally enjoyed the ambiguous narrative since it leaves space for me to interpret, but I can see the minimal story being a frustration.
