Using the search feature, you can't look up the word "Ys", as the search bar requires at least 3 letters to look something up. It's the only game series that I'm aware of that has this problem using the search bar, due to the low letter count of the name.

Is there any possible workaround to search for threads on this game series in particular? Some game names in the series are too short, and lack good alternative names (Ex: Ys II on MSX2)

Searching the word on the repo allows you to look up the games, however. It's only a problem in the forums.

Apologies if this is placed in the incorrect forum area.

Now imagine looking for "D" on the Saturn.
D and D2 are great examples of this as well! Those are very unfortunate names for a search engine.

I'm unsure what the best way to search for these games would be, aside from allowing the search engine to accept shorter words. The search as it currently is especially hurts a game like Ys VIII, which I know is very well regarded.

Not without substantial costs
  1. XenForo Enhanced Search $60.00
  2. https://www.elastic.co/pricing $95 per month

Wouldn't it be possible to do by changing the MySQL setting?
13. Why can't I search for words with 3 characters or less?
This is a limitation of the MySQL Full Text search function. Find more information on the MySQL site.
Note that with XenForo 1.1 and above, it is possible to set the minimum word length in the ACP -> Options -> Search Options: Search Minimum Word Length. This value must correspond with the MySQL full text minimum word length in the my.cnf configuration file. If the value in my.cnf is changed, all full text indices on the server (within MySQL) must be rebuilt, after which, the minimum word length value can be changed in the ACP.

It's technically possible to do but would have an impact on site performance. The smaller the query the slower it is cos more results.
