RPG Maker Classics

why....Bat Castle, of course!

Also, anyone that's interested in the scene as it was in it's golden age should absolutely read Stephen Gillmurphy's piece 'Dictionary to the Known World' here.
That looks interesting

people already suggested my go-to recs (space funeral, hylics and yume nikki) so i gotta pull out my more obscure picks. Mothlight, Blood Wizard Odyssey and Mother: Cognitive Dissonance are all pretty great in their own ways, Mothlight has a killer art style and a cool story, Blood Wizard Odyssey sort of makes me think of Space Funeral which is always good, and Cognitive Dissonance is a Mother/Earthbound fangame that takes place between the first and second games, if thats your thing. if you enjoy OFF i'd also highly recommend checking out the fanmade sequel, HOME, that one is really great. and if you want something that's not an rpg at all but is still made in the engine, i've always had a soft spot for Brutal: The New Challenges

Ruina: Fairytale of the Forgotten Ruins is a really impressive and atmospheric game. In terms of gameplay I've heard really good things about Demon King Chronicle and Hat World: New Testament.

I loved The Longing Ribbon back in the day. It was like Sweet Home meets Chrono Trigger and one of the best executions of turn-based survival horror I've ever seen. I think that came from how difficult it was, how infrequently you got to level up, and how few and far between save points were. It was really creepy and atmospheric too.

That being said, the game completely jumps the shark by the end. But until then, it's horror gold! xD.

There was a absolutely dogshit game called Zelda: The New One or something, but it's impossible to find nowadays. I remember dying of laughter at it when I was like 8 years old.
Posting it here to see if it maybe wills itself back into existence because of it.

Incredibly underrated game.

Y'all need Vampires Dawn

(Don't worry, it has an English translation)

And Desert Nightmare
DesertNightmareTitle.jpg

Both German RPG Maker games. Vampires Dawn is an RPG series about, well, vampires. There are three games (and a mobile phone spin-off) and the first two are freeware.
Desert Nightmare is a classic explorer horror RPG Maker game, available in several versions which are all a bit different from each other. A young girl gets stranded in a creepy American desert town.

I’m excited to see where ‘Boyhood Ends’ goes, idk if it was made in rpg maker but it’s definitely got the vibes down. It’s a sifi horror made by the same company as ‘Needy Streamer Overload’

I love using rpg maker because I can’t program for shit. I have tried learning it, things did not go well.

I know it’s not ancient but for me, Touhou: Nighter, Grinder and Uncut.

I think it’s made by someone in the FNAFB team and I love it, holds up well in humour still.

Also, any of the Okegom games.

How was Felvidek? It's been on my radar for a bit.
It's a fantastic game, with incredible visuals and art direction, a very good story and humor, the comedy is very dark and crass and the game is brutally difficult.

If you like RPG Maker games like Fear & Hunger i highly recommend Felvidek.

Completely unrelated, but congrats on finally finding a solid profile pic, heh.

More on topic, though... It sure would be nice to have a site like rpgmaker.net to use again. Hell, just having a dedicated "recommendations" thread would be neat.

It would probably require a lot of work, though. There's so many games that would have to be sifted through to make something comprehensive, after all.

Here’s some other classics I haven’t seen mentioned yet

Ao Oni
Misao, this game is really nostalgic to me especially
The Crooked Man, all of Uri’s games are iconic.

Purgatory

Creepypasta Land, it’s ingrained in me because I’d binge watch play throughs of it as a child

Rpg maker horror games was a huge part of my childhood; Still are a huge influence on the art I make today. I’d try to make my own rip offs of the most well known games, good times.

this thread sparks joy

Also, unsure if it was linked earlier, but know that you can find a lot of the games mentioned in this thread by starting here:
https://www.rpgmakerarchive.net/

The guy who runs it is a longstanding RPG Maker community contributor and dev and has done the lord's work of preserving old RM games with this site.

My pick for "u Should plAy this Gaem!!" that I didn't see mentioned here is Necropolis, a generally forgotten Rm2k3 vaporware demo by Jude:

It really just goes all the way with the aesthetic and feel, the writing is fun, and the battle mechanics are really cool and unique--and not just for an RPG Maker game. It's just a good little (preview of a) game.
