Rom hacks that blew you away?

Brave New World is a romhack of Final Famtasy 6 that greatly fleshes out the combat and esper system. The stats work in different ways now that actually make sense.

It got a lot of negative reception when it first came out due to the devs changing the script into some edgelord nonsense but you can thankfully patch the rom without the script changes now.

Every boss battle is a puzzle with multiple solutions. The ways you can build each character is really interesting. There was clearly a lot of thought put into balancing characters, equipment and relics. It's more difficult than the vanilla game but it is not a "hardtype" hack.

I can't recommend it enough. It even has a set on RetroAchievements if you're into that sort of thing.

This Super Mario World hack, A Plumber For All Seasons:

It feels like a dlc expansion to the original game. All of the sprite work is redone and it all looks awesome.

Super Mario Bros 2 (J) is also k8nd of an official ROMhack of sorts 😂

There are thousands out there, but beyond the usual color edits, text edits, difficulty changes, uncensoring, etc, what are some hacks that blew you away?

TMNT Shredder's Re-revenge on the MD. More than just another lazy SoR2 palette switch. The music, and enemies all have been redone as well to fit into the turtle universe. And those pixels are high quality as well.

MD+ Moonwalker. Seeing 16-bit Jackson flip that coin into the jukebox, and the real studio version of Smooth Criminal with vocals starting up was cool as shit.

And the most recent DBZ BT3 hack with Crossover Legends. Crazy work with all those characters.
Honestly, Pokemon Clover. Like think about it. A bunch of goobers on 4chan have worked on that game for YEARS. A bunch of anonymous people just combined their powers to make a needlessly long and elaborate shitpost that still totally works as a Pokemon game. And that one is an actual romhack, unlike Sage (which I wish they'd finish).

As someone who dropped Pokemon when it went into the Switch, playing Pokemon Radical Red was a real eye opener.
Gotta second the Radical Red love here. I like the new pokemon games but I don't like playing them (I like the mon designs, I don't like the bugs and glitches coupled with Nintendo trying to milk me of subscription money) and RR is a great way to play with those mons without putting up with 5fps gamespeed or textures refusing to work.

Plus so many quality of life features added, even with the harder overall difficulty the QoL updates make the game experience so much more enjoyable. Grinding is easier with the PokeVial, being able to swap night and day to catch mons without fussing with system clocks, letting Slacking use Slack Off on Truant turns makes him actually viable, pokecenters let you change natures at will so no catching 50 of a mon just to get 1 with Adamant on it, the Link Cable item is an evolutionary stone for mons that evolve by trade ripped straight from Legends Arceus. It's worth some hair pulling trainer fights and gym battles
