Welcome to the first Nostalgia Society monthly event!
We're a group that plays through retro games together, cycling games each month.
The goal of our group is to revisit old games and enjoy a playthrough together!

Whether you're new to the game, or it's a game you replay annually, the purpose of the group is to play an older game and communicate about it. Play it the way you want to! Emulation, real hardware, however you like! If you choose to play along with us, please make sure to avoid posting any spoilers without properly flagging them as such!

(From my understanding, something similar to this was hosted in the past by @Sayo who is a user from before my time. It's unfortunate that they are no longer active on the site, but with this continuation of something similar, let us keep them in our memory!)

I am going to be making a Hardcore Mode RetroAchievements account and trying to get all of the achievements for each game we play. I encourage you to do the same! We can share strategies and hints or tricks on how to best proceed.

Unfortunately, we did not receive nearly as many game nominations in the previous thread as I would have liked. So this time around, if you like the idea, please make sure to nominate a game for next month! You don't have to put together a pitch or anything like that, just throw out a name of a game you're interested in us all playing.

That being said, our first game is Parasite Eve, winning 5 votes to 1.

(From Wikipedia) Parasite Eve is a 1998 role-playing video game developed and published by Square. The game is a sequel to the novel Parasite Eve, written by Hideaki Sena; it is the first game in the Parasite Eve video game series. The story follows New York City police officer Aya Brea over a six-day span in 1997 as she attempts to stop the Eve, a woman who plans to destroy the human race through spontaneous human combustion. Players explore levels set in areas of New York while utilizing a pausable real-time combat system along with several role-playing elements.

Wikipedia info aside, the game is an interesting take on turn-based combat with survival horror RPG elements. Dark themes, dark subject matter, guns, monsters, great story, good fun.

Fun fact, Parasite Eve is also Square's first M-rated game, which is interesting.

Have fun everyone! :)

Everyone says "Parasite Eve is classic" but not many people says "it's a Resident Evil ARPG we Resident Evil fans deserved but CAPCOM ignored" lol.

Imagine remaking Resident Evil games but not making them something like an ARPG, instead all they did is simpler action version of the original. I'm disappointed, I don't see why a remake would matter to me. But yeah have fun rest of the fans lol.

I would ask for a Parasite Eve remake instead and hope they wouldn't ruin its RPG aspect.

@Waffles @Yousef @RageBurner @ciro64 Apologies for the ping but could someone please edit the OP and please put in the following underneath the first paragraph? I forgot to give a shoutout to Sayo! (Also, can you let me know why users cannot edit their posts after an hour?)

Starting on it now.
Apparently I was the only one who voted for Final Fantasy Tactics 😅

The idea I see in Japanese games that take place in America and Americans turn into a monster whom you have to kill: "America... a land of legal slavery where liberty cries blood due to the justice system suffers from injustice that making people inhale money for ignorant bliss to avoid seeing their monstrosity in the mirror of truth..." lolol. It makes Japanese monster games taking place in America has a subtle artistic meaning for killing Americans who turned into a monster like obviously saying "Americans are monster" and it's cherry on top when Americans enjoy killing each other via video games lolol.

I gotta ask: Is precise analog input essential in this game? Because I need a new controller a while ago so I bought a cheap knock-off, which works well except for the analog precision.

Love this game a lot, even though I don't love JRPG combat I think the element of real time movement keep things engaging enough for people who usually play action or horror games. I actually started playing it two weeks ago and have been chipping away at it. I'm currently in the Chinatown sewers near the end of the first disc.

Nice! just got it set-up on my Xstation. Should have some time on the weekend to start it up. I'm looking forward to it.

I play like 99% of PS1 games with the og controller with no sticks. I find it much more comfortable and most don't take advantage of them anyway. Anyone know if this is the 1% I should switch for?

Not at all, the closest thing is that you do have to be in very precise locations to interact with certain objects on occasion, so there's that. But you will probably still be able to get by.
Besides, the game is played using the D-pad. 😅

Not precise, but I prefer the analog stick, can help with some bosses to avoid their bullets.

Definitely not. But I do think that while precision isn't necessary, the hotboxes on some of the enemies' moves are wonky! Stick is definitely preferable but I don't think it requires insane precision.

For example, there is an enemy attack that spawns little waves of energy that shoot out in a fan. I was only able to dodge them like once when trying to go in-between the projectiles themself. I think movement in this game is way more than just dodging, it's anticipating enemy attacks and baiting out melee lunges to then counter-attack with your own.

I'm on Day 2 and I'm loving it so far! The battle music is incredible. I'm also really curious to see where this story goes! I've not heard the word Mitochondria used so much since I was 10 years old, learning about the powerhouse of the cell.

OK first question that comes to mind... During the rat scene why are the tiny mitochondrias screaming like tiny pixies?
