RGT Game Group Planning

I tried playing Final Fantasy Tactics on my old Anbernic RG351MP. The gameplay was actually great. I just didn't like how small the screen was and I decided that game deserves a larger screen. I've just put it off for years!
Those lavish graphics surely deserve a nice screen. Same for Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together.

Sounds like an interesting idea. PE sounds good, but I'd be down to try and play anything.

I've heard that Tactics Ogre is much more challenging than Final Fantasy Tactics. Depending on how Final Fantasy Tactics goes, we'll have to see if I'd be down for something more challenging after I complete it. I know that FFT gets up there in difficulty, too, which is what makes me think, damn, it must be intense.

I am old school, I don't believe in achievements nor trophies since PS360 era. As for me, that's not completing a game 100% :)

Aw seems you don't have anything to show for it then. :)

Well too bad I guess if they choose Parasite Eve you really don't have any incentive to replay it. I cant blame you, that Chrysler building grind sounds boring.

PE sounds like a good choice, you don't want something too short or long (I think something like fft is a bit much for a month, but I'm someone that LOVES that game so I take my time...) Also, PE is good because probably many haven't played or overlooked it. I can only speak for myself, but that is one I haven't played, despite being a HUGE square fan >_< I have played through ~half of PE2...

I wouldn't pick something like fft, or tactics ogre: many don't have the patience for srpgs. Also, games like that are a big time commitment >_> So I would keep genre concerns like that in mind.

::heart Tactics Ogre.

True. I hadn't considered the time factor. How many hours should we aim for? Considering I chose a month as the length for each game, I figured a longer game would be okay, that way it doesn't restrict us when we can select what game would be best. I guess maybe something topping out at around 30 hours would be best?

Think you have to first hone in on what the 'purpose' of the group is, for lack of a better word. Is it something akin to a book club where we discuss our experiences? If that's the case, staggered goals make more sense so that stuff is fresher in peoples' minds, as does not restricting ourselves with an arbitrary time limit, maybe. Some games will be doable in a month, some won't. Can either discount all the longer stuff entirely or open up the possibility to something like Xenogears.

Or is it a chain game where we pass the save around? Something like that is great for FFT. But as much as I like FFT, the ratio of narrative to hours played is pretty... dry. In a format that's just people doing their own playthroughs and coming in to talk about it, there's often not a whole lot to say.

I'm up for anything. Already played PE but I could replay on my EX save to better understand why that thing out of a Carpenter movie try to heist a sperm bank. If anyone has a good link for a proper translation of the book I'm also up for it.

I've also meant to start the FF tactics series.

We also got plenty of good ROM hacks in here, and even people who coded their own games. I know you guys would suggest some fun things to test out.

So as much as I like the idea of passing around a save, I would much rather we all play with an objective in mind like you mentioned. I want us all to do a full playthrough.

This is all of us brainstorming at once. Just because an idea is discussed but not chosen doesn't mean that it won't ever happen. If Rage feels like it, they can start a thread for the save sharing stuff since they came up with it! :)

I just came up with what I think might be interesting. What if we all work towards completing the majority or as many RetroAchievements for the game that we can? We can give tips and hints to each other while doing it.

Well, from your other thread, iirc, it's like a book club? Grapes of Wrath is a popular novel choice for book clubs on the long end and that takes ~10 hours to read. Not sure how that translates to a similar format for vidya though :loldog But something to think about?

Same, I'll play anything. And something like fft could be a good idea, since it is divided into 4 chapters already for the month.... And I would not complain about replaying fft ::heart I wasn't poo pooing the idea, just I don't think srpgs are that popular for most, only weirdos like me ::sadkirby I'm the only one in my irl friend group that loves tactics ::sadkirby I think it is the best ff game (have not played any after X-2).

So, I've never actually truly participated in a book club. I was under the assumption that everyone just met up and talked about how far they got in the book, discussed their opinions on characters and events, discussed criticisms, etc. Apologies if that's just not what happens at all with a book club. :)

Essentially what I'm trying to accomplish is recreate the feeling you get when you and your friends are all excitedly playing through a new video game, and then you come together and talk about how far you've each progressed. Like the most recent time I experienced that was when Dark Souls III came out. My friend and I sat there and played it on our own but talked to each other about what we found, tips on what to look out for, etc.

I want that but for retro games.

i mean there's no one true answer, with book clubs or with video game... book clubs. sometimes they do set reading goals every week, sometimes it's just some big jamboree after a while.

for a place like this, I think it makes sense to make it less structured. maybe if it's some longass game with a real story and people are playing at different rates we just do 'okay, after this amount of time we're not going to bother hiding spoilers for the first 20% of the game' and so on.

neway i'd also cast a vote for parasite eve. never got around to playing it.

I've decided that I'm gonna go ahead and go through with making a game group for the forum! This thread serves as the planning of it all. For those who missed my last thread, it's gonna work like this:

A retro game will be chosen. We will have the whole month to play through that game. We'll play through it on our own time, and use the thread I make as a place to come back and discuss the game together! Anyone can join, and if you decide to stop playing, that's cool too!

I like the idea of running this with everything being community-decided. Majority rule.

We need a name, so give me your best ideas! Otherwise I'll just default to something generic like the Retro Monthly Play-Along.

Also give me first game ideas! I was thinking Parasite Eve, maybe? :)
Aaaayyyyeeee! I’m glad you went along with the idea. @Sayo ‘s club was amazing and always wanted it to return and preserved in some form. One tip I have is that if you want to make it clear what’s being played, put it somewhere in the title. Sayo also made a thread for each new month a game was played. If you’ve questions feel free to chat with me in dms. I think you can initiate them now.

I have my save file, I always export saves and keep them somewhere safe when I finish games. Anyways, who would want to see it? there is nothing attractive about it for other people, just for myself.

But don't be so discouraged, for some reason grinding is terrible up to level 34, after that I don't know why but leveling up is way faster. Also, the building is not so difficult, just get weapons with multiple shoots, pieces and put those in powerful fire guns with some speed. I loved that from Parasite Eve mechanics, you can get so beefy just by mixing up weapons.

This is getting funny, because I also completed Final Fantasy Tactics (PS1) 100% with everything. Yeah, every special character to LV99, all skills, max money and all the items the game is suposed to have. It's a pity they included a multiplayer mode in FFT for PSP that lets you get multiple copies of unique equipement, it's kind of unfair for the PS1 players...

Freak it
Imma suggest a random Chinese rpg that I want to try

If we do Final Fantasy Tactics

And we're not going with that idea I had about making each participant a party member

I'm soloing it again

Well, the list is very short in options, I thought it would be more extensive, like a list of 10 games.

It is also not appealing if all the games appearing in the list are famous. I agree there would have to be random games that most people do not know.

Understood, thanks for the feedback! I noticed there was a decent amount of traffic on this thread the past 24 hours but very few game recommendations. There were a lot of people into Parasite Eve and Final Fantasy Tactics, so I figured they probably would need to do a head to head.

I think that with the next one I will stress the importance of giving a game nomination so that we have a good variety moving to the next. Also, depending on how fast the group clears whatever game we choose, we can also find out how long the next one should be. It's all a learning process, and it's most importantly ran by community majority-rule, so whatever wins goes.

True
I think it will be more fun if we pick a game that no body knows and experience it together
