I've decided that I'm gonna go ahead and go through with making a game group for the forum! This thread serves as the planning of it all. For those who missed my last thread, it's gonna work like this:

A retro game will be chosen. We will have the whole month to play through that game. We'll play through it on our own time, and use the thread I make as a place to come back and discuss the game together! Anyone can join, and if you decide to stop playing, that's cool too!

I like the idea of running this with everything being community-decided. Majority rule.

We need a name, so give me your best ideas! Otherwise I'll just default to something generic like the Retro Monthly Play-Along.

Also give me first game ideas! I was thinking Parasite Eve, maybe? :)

Also it could have a relay format: stop points are decided beforehand and the save is passed along and advanced sequentially by participants.

Love this idea, great to keep in the pocket for brainstorming with later on. This is something I've seen done with games like Dwarf Fortress and RimWorld, but that's because they're like colony sims and can result in a lot of hilarious stuff happening from two different people commanding. Not sure what kind of games this would really be a good fit for in the retro game scene. Can you think of any that would be fun to do this with?

Hm... it would have to be something with large compositional variability like Pokémon or Final Fantasy Tactics, I think.

XCOM or the original X-Com could work. As for either you could mod them to add more solider classes or entire content expansions so you can have more variety. Like with Open X-Com for example you can use the WH40K mod + ROSIGMA and watch as the game group dies in agony or survive somehow.

I was thinking of recommending Final Fantasy Tactics until I had the idea to have each individual hire new recruits at the beginning and name them all after all the other people doing the run 'together'. I was also kicking around the idea of each player requesting a particular job class and specify which abilities they want to unlock, so that every person involved in the playthrough gets a character based on their preferences.

This is also an amazing idea. I've been wanting to play through Final Fantasy Tactics, as I've never played through it before, so this gets my vote. People who aren't playing can also just throw out their name and job requests as well. This sounds super fun! This has my vote.

Oh I highly recommend it. The story and score are fit for a Final Fantasy, and you'll just have to see the gameplay for yourself.

Final Fantasy for me has always been one of those series where you have more fun in the menus than anywhere else in the game. :loldog

I tried playing Final Fantasy Tactics on my old Anbernic RG351MP. The gameplay was actually great. I just didn't like how small the screen was and I decided that game deserves a larger screen. I've just put it off for years!
