Sometimes I remember having made a thread about a subject I like but when they're too old I hesitate to bring them back, should I rather make a new one (while linking to the original) or can I bring this up?

I think the former may be the better choice.

PS: my two thread were for game beta/unreleased builds and sound effects.

probably wrong, in other retro forums i ofter revive very necro threads;
i mean being retrogaming i don't think it is so inappropriate?
'old' RTG threads are so fresh in comparison :)

Unlike the vast majority of forums out there, we don't punish "grave digging" -- go ahead and "revive" whatever threads you want!
Since I sadly haven't been actually active in forums around the 2000's I have never understood that implicit rule regarding "necroing" threads.

Of course, someone spamming older topics without adding anything relevant just for the sake of reviving them would appear to be rude since they are allowed to create a new one but on the other hand is there a time limit? What is the actual amount of inactivity to make it count as necro?

The issue is that it's never always explicit so it could lead to confusion...

I would be really interested in that why don't you do that what's behind it ???

Well... I have been on forums pretty much non-stop since 2004, so I can say that the "time limit" was about three months (and it really did make sense back then), but the issue was that that rule was concocted when the internet was in its infancy and it's now just a happily relegated relic from the past, kind of like those images limiting images because most users were surfing on 56K modems -- such rules have no reason to be anymore.

Sometimes a person gotta be a Neuromancer and Necromancer!!! lolol

Honestly IMO reviving old threads is ok when the topic continues. It's not ok when someone using the thread for something out of its intended purpose. In generally it's not cool when a person asked about a problem A and someone else asking problem B or some random guy stealing the thunder of a popular thread for unrelated stuff. As long as it keeps related its fine by me no problemo.

it depends on the thread, but generally if its not something that has been solved and you want to add to the conversation i think its fine. necroposting is really only annoying on bigger forums anyways

I always feel bad about forum etiquette because this is the first one I've really gotten heavy into. So I'm glad you asked this. I don't know if there's a good way to check if a similar topic has already been posted either. I'm technologically and culturally obsolete.

Having a proper "netiquette" on a site is nice because too many instant message social networks are filled with people arguing (if not being condescending and insulting).

On the other hand unwritten rules are an issue since we should be all clear about what's ok or not.
