alright, the ace combat 3 achievements might be what drives me to insanity

I don't really go for the hardcore achievements but I respect the effort for those who go to master an achievement.

What's difficult about them? I've heard good things about AC3. Specifically the JPN release.

Just mastered Clock Tower for the SNES! I thought it was alright. The atmosphere and sound desing were really good, but I wasn't a big fan of the plot. This may sound odd but my favorite part was the intro cinematic. That was super immersive actually.

I'm not quite sure what game I will go for next yet, I've got a lot of options in mind! But meanwhile I'll probably finish clearing the remaining achievements I've got for FFVI Advance ::peacemario

I'm working on Resident Evil 2 for the PS1 right now. Huge set with ~130 achievements including a pacifist run (no zombie kills), no save runs for both scenarios, and killing all bosses with only a knife.

I'm having a ton of fun with it. Had to take a break from it for a while but I'm hopeful to finally master the set in the next month or two at most.

That reminds me, I should play through RE2make for Halloween this year. Never beat it when it originally came out. I've got a crippling "buy, play, but don't finish" problem.

Good luck with your mastery!

yeah I think I'm done with this one. cool game but this set just ended up feeling pretty stupid.

hey guys, not gonna drop my own collection of achievements because I really don't have any except for some Ridge Racer achievements I got long time ago (I didn't even knew the game had, but looking at my account I have them unlocked lol). But what games do you think have been enhanced by having achievements? I'm talking about how different do you think the experience of playing a game (that you presumably have completed once or several times before) is now compared to having a whole list of things to unlock.

In that regard I'd put racing games, for me it was very different completing races in GT2 without achievements than now having an actual reward, even if it's just some useless award for your profile ::lol

Also have you tried the hardcore and unofficial achievements? ::disagreeI refuse to use hardcore because no fucking way I'm giving up 60fps patches for some unlocks, I like retro stuff but sometimes I wanna enjoy a smooth game.

All this said, who thinks this forum should get some compatibility with retroachievements? Would be rad to put your achievements in your profile so everyone can see them! ::beer

I would say the DKC trilogy, Link to the Past, MvC2, Mega Man X, KH: Chain of Memories, and Final Fantasy 3 (NES).

Come on don't spare me the details, specially MvC2 when the game itself already has a section for unlockables that lists them plus the locked characters, so what are the achievements for? Doing infinite combos with all characters or some shit? ::lol

Ah yes I forgot to say this, but this exactly is the reason why achievements are actually fun... they give you new ways to beat the game and function more as challenges than anything, leading to interesting and enjoyable outcomes sometimes exploiting the mechanics the game comes with going further from the vision the developments initially might have had for them.

Getting all achievements usually makes you replay the game lots of times, specially in these retrogames as I'm sure you should be able to get all achievements in one run with modern games, but these oldies really make you push it beyond the limit... which might be annoying for me (and I get why) but it takes me back when we would only have one or two games to play and we had to stay with that for months. Back then if you got bored you had to come up with your own ideas like "let's see who can beat the game in the least time". heh, talk about the origins of speedrunning.

They're like a bonus mode you get after beating the game, like a harder difficulty. Shit I gotta try to this with RE3!!! Hope mercenaries mode got it's own achievements too!::smash

I thought LUNAR 2's achievements were good. Some were a little wacky, but nothing too bad. A fair amount of them alerted me to stuff in the game that I never knew about and never would have found on my own, like how Ruby can OHKO the first boss under the right circumstances.

Great game that was, was that on the PS1 version? God those old RPGs were full of secrets! ::biggrin Games I'm sure achievements will come in extra handy will be the Suikodens for ps1, add in the Chronos and Shining Force 2 (does genesis even have achievements? Because if not it sure needs em!), I remember those games being full of hidden stuff, so much that you could completely miss important playable characters if you didn't know where to get em.

Shit FFIX must go crazy with that!

No, just Iron Man, and specifically because of the video about doing a "mofuggin Infinite".
As for the rest, DKC1 has the Blue Balloon near the end of Snow Barrel Blast, clearing Oil Drum Alley while riding Rambi, and clearing Torchlight Trouble without freeing Squwaks.
DKC2 has beating the first level while holding Right the whole time, there's "Twisted Topsail Treasure", which is "Use the Warp Barrel, then collect everything in reverse order, except for the G", clearing the Bonus Room in Screech's Sprint using only Diddy, and clearing Parrot Chute Panic without holding on to Quwaks for more than 2 seconds.
DKC3 has finding all of the hidden holes that you have to open by throwing Kiddy Kong on them, clearing Fish Food Frenzy while keeping Nibbla blue, beating Krack-Shot Kroc without pressing Y, and beating Tyrant Twin Tussle using only Kiddy.
Link to the Past has stuff like beating Agahnim without using your sword, breaking Helmasaur's helmet with only the Hammer, then hitting him with a Silver Arrow, finishing Mothula off with the Good Bee, beating Turtle Rock first, and probably my favorite challenge of the set: Beating Ganon's Tower Swordless.

Wait, they added an achievement for the MvC2 Iron Man infinite video? Hahahah

For those unaware:

Undoubtely, rare was cooking some real gourmet shit with this back then, it was like Crash would do in the ps1, every new game was 10 times better than the one before... Still some of the best that ever came out of a SNES. Damn I really gotta replay this shit ::rolleyes

MvC2 is a really weird game, it's this strange mishmash of past assets that somehow manage to work together, with over the top (and broken) fighting mechanics sticked together with tape so it makes sense with its ridiculous amount of characters... and yet, of all the 2d fighting games I've played it's the one that brings me the most fun.

I played that shit so much that I firmly believe that if we had achievements back then I would have gotten all of em without even checking the requirements, we would just try every damned possible combination in the world.

Ganon tower swordless is an all time classic, prob one of the oldest videogame challenges, glad to see it here.

Mega Man X has getting the Heart in Boomer Kuwanger's stage before getting his weapon, beating every other Maverick while saving Chill Penguin for last, beating the game Buster Only, and beating all 5 of the Mavericks Buster Only in Sigma Stage 3 without refilling your health or dying.
KH: Chain of Memories has beating Axel on the first floor without pressing the D-Pad, beating Oogie with a Deck of 9 or less Cards, surviving against Cloud for 90 seconds, then winning, beating Vexen without using any Fire-based attacks, and beating Riku 4 with only the Kingdom Key. And that's just Sora's story. Riku has defeating Hades without activating Dark Mode, beating Leaxeus while staying on the left side of the room, and my favorite of the set: Beating Riku Replica on Floor B8 using only 4 different Buttons.
Finally Final Fantasy 3 has beating the Nepto Shrine with a Non-Magic User in the lead, beating Medusa while only dealing damage with a single Fighter, beating Salamander without Mages, clearing the Cave of Darkness using only Water Crystal Jobs, and beating Titan with only Mages.

OOWWWww those last 2 sounds like a pain in the ass! I couldn't beat the game with only the buster, just not my way... ::lol

Never played the KH games, which is weird considering I was deep into FF back then, but still I don't think they are very challenging games, are they?

NES FF3? If that's so, nice fucking job, Square never topped that level of difficulty ever. Also in terms of freedom, few japanese games ever gave us as much options to design my party as that one did, great game specially for the time it came on.

Beating Medusa with a fighter? ONLY ONE? ::injured

I've never played the original Chain of Memories, just RE:Chain of Memories in the Kingdom Hearts 1.5 ReMiX, but it's relatively challenging enough just doing standard trophies. I'd imagine that there's some weird little achievements mixed in there that would make it pretty rough.

Kingdom Hearts games can be pretty annoying, though. I find playing on Critical to be mostly fine, but some bosses are just ridiculous. Dying in Kingdom Hearts does not give off the feeling of "oh, that was my fault" like how dying in Dark Souls or something similar feels. It's more of a "great, let's figure out how to not die to that bullshit."

"oh, that was my fault"
said nobody ever, because last time I checked we all screamed in agony while playing Dark Souls ::lol at least the first time, it's that kind of game that once you play it the first time it just becomes easy out of nowhere, at least for me.

Now PvP is another beast, that's when the ''Let's figure how to not die in 1 hit by this dark sorcery piece of shit'' comes into action.

That reminds me, I think that's the only videogame I've gotten all achievements into it... fromsoftware never topped the cohesive magnificence of DS1 if you ask me ::agree

Basically like many JRPG bosses then... sometime it's all good sometimes it just sucks.
Didn't ask me but Vandal hearts is very good, it was my first TRPG and it made me love the genre.
Woah how did I nearly miss this? Vandal Hearts was THE BEST TRPG you could get in ps1, and I say that while having played FFT almost religiously. Seriously, this was one hell of a game. The trials is still one of the most epic things I ever did in a videogame, fuck I loved that game to death... and still do::beer

you know what fuck it, I'll get into the repo to install this shit and get all achievements, meet me next year when I finally complete it.

Not many achievements to speak of at the moment. Trying to 100% Parasite Eve at the moment, but have to do another run because my internet went out when I got 2 off the trading cards.

Was doing Megaman Legends, but I can't do the speed challenges with the minigames.

I mastered the Megaman Legends set and while the minigame cheevos are the hardest of the bunch it's not as impossible as people make it out to be.

If you play on easy mode you'll have a unique buster that fires much faster which will help immensely with the balloon minigame (which is the hardest imo). I was still able to get the highscore while playing on normal though but had to wait until a bit later in the game when I had better buster parts that allowed me to fire more shots faster.

For the racing minigames I would just look at different records on youtube and try to copy their movements 1:1. You really need to practicing drifting in and out of tight turns.

The dog minigame just requires practice and really good rhythm.

It's difficult but not quite as hard as some people on the achievement page claim it to be.

I've had a Retroachivements account for ages now, but only had a handful of achievements on it. After seeing this thread, I'm going to make an effort to 100% some of my favorites. Aria of Sorrow looks to be about what I expected, although there are a few you have to do on the secret modes which I haven't done before. Sonic Adventure 2 likewise is fairly similar to the Steam achievements, although there's a lot of "find all the animal" achievements (not terribly interesting, but not difficult) and "beat every boss without getting hit" (going to be a massive pain).

The racing one is the one I'm really really struggling with. I'm just not good at the tight turns, it's killing me
