Indie Retro-styled indie horror games discussion!

Well, I started to play Signalis about two days ago... I'm just quitting it: aesthetic is superb, of course, gameplay is ok too, but I guess it's not for me. I find it quite derivative and there is nothing that pushes me to keep going. Crow Country seems interesting too, but I am afraid I will meet the same scenario: OK, but not enough to beat it.

I'm interested by Signalis, art direction looks dope, but I don't know if it's a real indie title as it's published by Humble Games.

One retro-styled horror game I could think about is Storied Untold by No Code (Devolver). Short adventure game. Their other game Observation was also really good.

And Darkwood.

And Darkwood.
I really need to get back to Darkwood at some point, that game is dope.

Did you give up around the mines and the area after the mines? It's definitely kind of a slog for me, even though I love the game to bits.

Signalis is simply one of the best horror games ever. Not only because the horror, but because it's well crafted world and narrative. In the end I don't know if I was scared or just sad.

And there's Labyrinth of the Demon King that just released this week. I only played the demo it looks GOTY material, at least to me.

I've had my eyes on that whole trend for a while but since I don't game as much as I'd like I haven't gotten around to playing any of them yet. Crow Country is probably the most interesting to me yet. A lot of them are all run and hide gameplay, which I don't like typically.

I think retro style goes well with horror video games. For example World of Horror and FAITH: The Unholy Trinity. I also like video games of Puppet Combo like Christmas Massacre and Murder House. However I personally had a clash with Puppet Combo on Twitter because they seriously stated why their other games intentionally not on Steam is just because of negative reviews. It's really unfortunate that they treat their video games and customers poorly, unfairly punishing their fans too just because of people who have different preferences and ignorant mindless haters.

World of Horror is one of my absolute favorites, but I haven't had a chance to try out FAITH.
Also that thing about Puppet Combo is silly, it'd be totally on brand with the "cheesy 80s horror flick" aesthetic their games go for. Not *all* 80s horror flicks are masterpieces, but they can be cheesy and fun in their own way.

Hell, there's this one guy pumping out Puppet Combo like games like nobody's business, and they're ALL OBJECTIVELY BAD but it's in a so bad it's good kind of way.

Interested in both Signalis and Crow Country. Have purposefully kept myself in the dark about both of them. Similarly, I enjoyed Alisa alot, a game clearly inspired by PSX survival horror games, most notably Resi 1. The game's a bit rough around the edges, but it feels like a game made with a clear vision.

Re:Turn is a very nice game.
Detention is another recommendation.
Yume Nikki is something kind of weird, but if you like that thematic it's an interesting one.

Also, you can try a game called Walk (散歩), it's a demo but it's kind of an original concept from a classic idea.
