How do you guys feel about these? Been playing a ton of BallisticNG lately and it feels like a very faithful successor to the Wipeout games

While I do like them (particularly Spelunky and UFO50), I do feel like a good chunk just try and ape classic games without 1) really considering why they were good in the first place or 2) bringing anything new to the table

When it comes to Retro throwbacks or what I sometimes might call "Fake-bit" games, I look for one of two qualities, either A.) A game that looks & plays like an older game so authentically (minus the bugs & old video quality) that it would take very little work to actually port it to the specific system or generation of systems it was inspired by, or B.) A game that leans into its own anachronistic character by going for a more experimental mixed media approach rather than a strictly "retro" aesthetic.

Maybe I am the odd one but, to me, a good game is a good game. I am no gatekeeper or purist. I like Khimera: Destroy All Monster Girls because its a fun game. I don't give a shit if it's "retro", or if it would play correctly on a real SNES. I found it, I played it, I enjoyed it. I don't need (or want) to pontificate.

Sometimes a developer of a game makes games with the tools they know how to use. If it ends up looking like a SMS game, who cares.

New games should be able to take inspiration from older games without being limited to them. Even in art styles. Like middler said "A good game is a good game". As long as the marketing is honest i see no problem with "So retro" or retro throwback games. Odallus: The Dark Call Certainly couldn't be played on an actual NES bit it looks and plays really great.
