These two games are pretty much favorite games of my dad back when he first played them, finishing Super Metroid and almost betting Zero Mission in a emulator but not having the time because of work and other priorities in his life. I decided to finish both of them because of him and this was my first time playing a Metroid game. I was already familiar with the games a long time ago but never finished any of them.

Zero Mission is a game that i consider to be a perfect remake for a game. While most remakes of franchises tries to put way too many things that distances the game from the original, almost like is ashamed from it, this game mix well between adding new features (that already existed in later games in the franchise, like a mini-map, save states, recovering stations) but also having the same structure of exploration of the first game with the same bosses, abilities and even adding a extra section original to this game to it, making not only a great way to experiencing the first metroid game, but also not completely substitute the original (even thought it has a lot of problems, it is a nice NES game, and Zero Mission unlocks it for you to play if you want after beating the game first time). The graphics and soundtrack are great, both mixing pretty well the atmospheric vibe of the game. The pixeled cutscenes is also pretty high quality, althought the story is simple and this scenes only serve for us to see the bosses or Samus reactions (except one that has more lore about that universe and the backstory of Samus). The bosses are the weakest part, they are not bad, but considering that a prefered way way more the ones in Super Metroid and these ones are for most part pretty simple and some a beated with ease (like Ripley, his version in Zero Mission can be defeat by just spamming missiles over and over). Mother Brain was pretty difficult but fun and the last boss was a bit of a dissapointment (almost reminds me of Mega Man X3 final boss, one that i did not liked). Overall, a great game, almost my favorite from GBA (i prefer Zelda Minish Cap more)

Super Metroid has some elements that a really liked but are used pretty scarcelly (like the the grappling beam and the speed buster, they are so much fun but are used just in some specific moments), and the positioning of the recovery stations are not as balanced as Zero Mission, but regardless of that, this game is so good that i wished it was longer and had more maps and bosses. The final form of the Mother Brain is a great cinematographic ending for the game, and the main mission is pretty enganging (looking for the Metroid Larva as a cool motivation even thought i never played Metroid 2 that introduces it) and when we discover where it was is a pretty cool "twist" (not exactly a twist but a pretty cool moment nonetheless). A great game and probably my favorite from SNES (this and Yoshi's Island pretty much fight for first place)

P.S. : Give a comment about any error about the review, any constructive critiques are always welcomed.

I'm kinda like you, because Zero Mission was the first Metroid that I've beaten and it was relatively recently too. Then I went to Super Metroid was well. Although I kinda dropped my playthrough half way through and I've been meaning to get back to it. (guess where I got stuck)

Anyway, Zero Mission was a fun experience. The power trip moment was quite remarkable as well. I'm glad they added that extra section to the game.

I played a good chunk of this game on a Wii, looked quite good on a CRT, save for the smaller screen size.

I tried playing NES metroid before and I like the game aesthetic and vibes. But the gameplay needs a lot of polishing. I wonder if there's a romhack that changes just that and not the artstyle.

I am the only one whos annoyed that Nelson2001 is liking everyone's comments? This is the like 50th post I notice this.

You should play Metroid Fusion then, I personally consider it the best 2D game in the franchise, even over Zero Mission or Super

Thats just because the NES version of Metroid wasn't that good. You could say the same with Samus Returns.
It was too good...back in the nes era. Super Metroid literally DESTROYS it by comparison. Also Samus Return is a gameboy game that is still good today. Especially for a 4bit game.

My favorite game of the series is Metroid 4 aka Fusion. So good that they brought back the X for Dread....as for that game. #2

...Just no, theres a reason why both of them got remade.

Nice stuff! Have you considered joining the Writer's Guild? That way it can be published as an article or proper review (with some images and tighter formatting).

By what you spoilered, do you mean the home stretch from getting the new suit and power bombs to the final boss?

I still consider Super Metroid to be one of the best video games of all time, period.
But maybe I'm biased.
For me is pretty much the same. If i ranked my favorite ones, Super Metroid is easily one of those. Also, pretty cool profile pick. Chrono Trigger + Chrono Cross are amazing games (i still need to finish Cross thought lol)
