I've been a fan of games on the PSX like Fluid/Depth and Mario Paint's Music Maker software was a joy growing up too!

I wonder what are some other good 'music making" games on retro platforms? So like excluding pc or mobile type games...things like snes/psx/dreamcast/ps2/gameboy/whathaveyou-

What are some music games you've enjoyed working with? What makes your specific choices special? Feel free to geek out about it!

Music making stuff at games are quite a rarity these days, honestly I think I only tried Mario Paint's too.
And Animal Crossing's island theme maker stuff if that count.

uematsu himself came to my house to see my "super mario rpg tadpole minigame" compositions.

OKay I completely forgot about that one, thanks for that!

And yeah I'd say the animal crossing song maker counts too. It's atleast a simple composition toy if anything :3

it was Garage Band on my Macbook back in the 2010s. :) Great memories.

I'm not sure if it's worth mentioning Music 2000... Back then I bought it without a second thought, but listening to my "compositions" nowadays makes me want to throw up.

I found this when I got interested in the stage in SSB Brawl. I just enjoyed it because you don't have to be musically talented to have fun. Sometimes you just wanna bounce things on leaves to make different sounds or watch rows of plankton sing using NES sounds.

Does "sound editor" mode in a game counts? Then my favorite is Kaidō Battle 2: Chain Reaction (Kaido Racer 1) sound editor mode allow you to produce your own music. I couldn't find any video about it but there is a music someone produced using it lol:

Not working with it in any kind of workflow, but I remember having an absolute blast as a kid on Jam Sessions for the DS. If you want something more professional you also have Korg on both the DS AND 3DS!
