Retro Handhelds General Thread

for me its important to have large screen
353 & v90 getting difficult to see
i tried casting to laptop & tablet screen
glad to hear the problem is with the card instead of the device

i think the trimui smart pro deserves a special mention as well
if it had android it would be perfect
but everything else wow just wow
I also think the same about large screen, but opposite about Android. What makes a console bad is to use Android. If it is compatible with any retrogaming Linux distro, then it's ok, you can choose between, but forcing Android is very bad.

yeah i hear you
indeed probably won't be the best option for the trimui smart pro either
its just a personal preference, i don't like installing new firmware on these devices
while i use linux (mint) on my laptop, the reason i prefer android is because of access to the internet & easy customizability

I still need to sit down with it but my first few tests were promising and also disappointing.

I got Vita3K going and Persona 4 Golden seemed to run okay-ish after following a guide. That's good because I really wanted to experience that on an OLED screen again.

Next I tried Outrun 2006 Coast 2 Coast on PCSX2. And it ran badly. I tried messing with some of the settings but nothing seemed to help. I really wanted to be able to play that on the system and I thought PS2 would be pretty painless, but I guess not. Even the PSP version was dropping frames.

i just tried Outrun 2006 on an RP4 using Nethersx2 as an emulator and it was not running on default settings at all.
so i changed it to native internal res and switched it from vulkan to open gl
and it went from being unplayably slow to hyper speed
so i turned on frame limiter and now its running almost perfectly
can probably be tweaked a little more, but im still figuring out my RP as well XD
GL!

Oh, sorry, I meant NetherSX2 on my post, I just said PCSX2 for some reason. I'll give what you said a try the next time I sit down with it and report back - I do think I fiddled with the resolution and swapping to OpenGL but I'll try again, thanks!

Any of you hear of the Ayn Thor yet? I'm thinking of replacing my Odin 2 Mini with it.

It looks really neat, but aside 3DS, what else can emulate? Video says nothing ._.

haven't watched that video but its an Android device, with quite a high end chip (snapdragon 8 gen 2 or something like that)

pretty much everything should run on this

you can't imagine how long I've been waiting for a device like that to drop

it will replace my Odin Pro (am I the only one to even have the OG Odin ? everyone seem to have Odin 2)

i think the AYN odin will be my next one ive heard the steam deck can only be held for about 30 minutes if your lucky ive nerve damage in my left hand so i like my anbernics but ive got plenty of them and the odin can do more than the 557 judging by feedback.

I did in fact pre-order the Ayn Thor, I will report back whenever it gets here. No clue when it does. October I think I've heard?

I've got the R36S from TEMU two month ago and I just love it.-
Some tutorials suggest updates through wifi conection, but still haven't done that.

I started with these retrogaming handhelds way back with the Dingoo A320. That was the first time I saw something that was more than a cheap Famiclone or "PMP MP4 Handheld Game". You can put your own roms and emulators on it, and you can actually save your games. I was amazed just because of those basic features.

Around the time the pandemic hit, more of these handhelds started popping up. Devices like the RG 350M were running OpenDingux, which got my attention. I bought one, then two, then five, and now I have a small collection (mainly Anbernic ones).

I stuck with the budget handhelds though (around $80 or below). More recently, popular options would be anything from Anbernic's RG XX series of handhelds or the TrimUI Brick. Even within this tier, you can expect good performance up to PS1. Things get dicey with N64, PSP, DC and beyond. With custom firmware from an amazing community, these devices are awesome at retro emulation.

I knew about the Dingoo back then, but I decided to get a PSP instead. I also knew about that original GPD PC handheld in 2015, but that thing was way too expensive for me lol.

Then I just sorta stuck with hacking the "real" handhelds, 3DS/Vita, until I got an RG35XX in 2023. I've now gone down a bit of a rabbit hole. Though with the Ayn Thor and an RG34XX I feel like my needs are basically all met.
