Hi! I wanted to make this thread for myself to log the retro games I'm playing through by year (currently on 1986) and to get some recommendations for some games I should play in the future. I've started playing through the NES library and began the Master System's library about a day ago and so Far I've Played,
NES:
Super Mario Bros.
Ghosts 'n Goblins
Gradius

SMS:
Fantasy Zone
World Grand Prix
Alex Kidd in Miracle World

I'd also appreciate some recommendations for some essential or obscure games from any region on any console (and handheld) from the 3rd console generation up to the 7th (Unless the 7th gen isn't retro yet, in which case the 6th gen instead). Pretty much give me anything that's good so that I don't miss out on it! Thank you!

I would recommend playing through some of the games from franchises that are considered iconic. You have already played Super Mario so I'm assuming you'll play 2 and 3 as well. You can then follow it up with Super Mario World since that's definitely an essential.

The NES Ninja Gaiden trilogy is another great one. Castlevania series particularly the original and 3 to start with. The Contra games as the original as well as it's sequel Super C are still great. Kirby, Mega Man and Metroid are also great ones to get into.

If you're a fan of the MGS games but haven't played the two MSX games- Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake, I would highly recommend those as well.

TMNT has a great track record in games with the ones Konami put out, so if you're a fan of that series I would also recommend checking them out with Turtles in Time being a fan favorite.

In regards to obscure games I don't know if they are considered such but I believe the Sengoku games deserve attention if you're looking for a fun beat 'em up. The third one in particular is fantastic.

Thanks for the recommendations! I've been intimidated with playing The Ninja Gaiden trilogy, but doing this finally gives me an excuse to do so lol. I've played through the MSX Metal Gear games (big fan of the MGS series), but I'll still play the two NES games since I know the first one has some differences and the sequel is a whole different game. I've never heard of Sengoku before, so I'm excited to try the games out for the first time I've played some of the games you've listed already before starting this, but I'm not at all adversed to doing some replays!

Hope you enjoy all these games. When you do come around to playing Ninja Gaiden trilogy I would recommend playing the Japanese version of Ninja Gaiden 3 since they made it harder for the US release. You can still play the US version later on if you wish. I would also add the NES Batman game to the list as well if you haven't played it already. The difficulty is brutal at times but it's graphics, music and overall presentation is top notch.
