Wrecking Crew always feels like a bit of a fever dream for me: I know it exists, I had it on NES, and I even remember enjoying it... But no-one ever brings it up, which causes me to forget everything about it until I come across it again and am like 'Oh, yeah! That game ruled!'.

It's a never-ending, vicious cycle!

But what's YOUR experience with it? Do you love it? Hate it? Are completely indifferent to it?

Mario has done so much, that it's pretty easy to forget he was a construction worker on top of everything else. My experience with it was seeing Spike's trophy in SSBM, then I loaded it onto my virtual console on the Wii. It was alright.

I bought it for $6 at Gamestop in 2002 and I had a fun time with it for a while. May not be the best Mario spinoff, but it's an arcade style game with a neat level editor for the time. The true way to play this is Vs. Wrecking Crew and Wrecking Crew 98.

Liked that game back then, way more than other puzzle-type games, which surprised my aunt (who's a classic Bomberman and Lode Runner master gamer)

Back then we called it "HAMMER TIME!!!" 🔨

Nintendo was most likely experimenting with Mario (assuming that it's the same jumpman from Donkey Kong).

I was still surprised to see Spike of all characters in The Super Mario Bros. Movie but it made sense since it's supposed to be their journey before Super Mario Bros.

Come to think of it Spike was like an "proto-Wario" as a villainous counterpart to Mario and it's interesting how the world around Mario was pretty much down to Earth with New Donk City (which you could see in the Gameboy Donkey Kong game) and the relatively realistic environments (like the sewer from the Mario Bros arcade game or even the Mario's Cement Factory Game & Watch) then suddenly going into a surreal kingdom in Super Mario Bros.

I need to find interviews and retrospectives about how and why Nintendo has decided to do that.
