Regarding Homebrew Ports and Emulators

Is it "AI used" if AI was used only to location of certain things but did everything manually?

Regarding homebrew ports and emulators... does it qualify as "AI used" if you only used AI to ask the location of certain things or to guide you on how to do something but you did everything manually anyway?

I wouldn't say it was... any more than asking a teacher for information you didn't have was cheating. Unless you're literally typing into the AI to write and do everything for you, and you're only asking it for help in learning where something is or how something is done, then no, I don't think it really counts or matters.

Like with the people doing fan translations of old games via AI... I don't see that as wrong or cheating either. These games are old, over 20 years or more in some cases, and are never going to get proper translations. So having AI do it because, well, who could afford it outside a company wanting to re-release it?

Again, no. As to your original question, I don't think it matters or counts.

But if that's all you're doing, why even bother to ask?....

It's not like you're having it write a script or make the game for you. This seems like a moot point to ask about. I'm not, mind you, dogging on you for asking... it's nice that you did.

But again, it seems silly to ask about something so simple, even when using AI for it.

Probably subjective, but I'd say if the AI didnt create any assets or write any code then no.

The reason I ask is because several homebrew communities label their work as "AI used" and "AI not used" and it got me thinking, if I only asked AI to help guide me on something but I did it myself would that go under AI used? Do people understand that AI usage goes beyond "ChatGPT convert this for me, done, now to take full credit" or no?

AI is a tool like any other. People are really going overboard with the AI hate imo.
(Dont get me wrong, I think we're all doomed to a fiery robot apocalypse/surveillance hellscape.)

But slop is only slop if the quality is shitty. Yeah you can vibe code or let it create assets with six-fingered hands and put out a shit product with AI, or you can use it skillfully and quality-control whatever you have it do. It can be a powerful tool if used properly.

I think the categorization itself is debatable.

Just saying "AI used" or "AI not used" is too broad.
Even if a person didn't use AI personally, AI might still be used in the chain of tools or third-party things involved in creating it.

Maybe having more precise terms can help? for example:
AI Usage:
TopicAI Usage
ArtMajor Usage
CodingAdvice
Original Text/DialogueNone
TranslationMajor Usage, Human Supervised

Even so, i'm not sure how useful this information might be...
The values on such a table won't necessarily translate to "High quality content" or "Poor quality content".
Not to mention that there's no guarantee that it will be always honest... and the dishonesty might go both ways.

Finally, if we are for whatever reason stuck with "AI used" and "AI not used" options, "AI used" would be technically more correct, while "AI not used" would be the more human-correct option.

I don’t know whether it’s AI or real
