Ahoy me hearties, 🏴‍☠️

I know there should be lots of cool games made on OpenBOR engine.
Do you know the best ones which actually support three or more players simultaneously?

Final Fight Ultimate or Streets of Rage seems to be the obvious choice, but I’m more into Battletoads.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Eh
They tend to be kinda clunky and janky
Maybe it's just me but I have yet to find an OpenBOR game that's as good as a beat em up on an actual console

There's a Marvel beat em up coming out next week, maybe you could check that out

Most OpenBOR games are not as good as people would have you believe. They are usually poorly designed with an emphasis on cheap, quarter munching gameplay. Overly aggressive AI that is too smart, gameplay that is too fast, etc. Plus, most of them are not very imaginative or creative. They just feel like bootleg versions of better games designed by people who aren't creative enough to make real video games and actually get a real job in the video game industry or even with a good indie studio. The people in the OpenBOR community all pat each other on the back convincing each other that they are brilliant developers who are underappreciated when the reality is that most of them are untalented hacks like ZVitor.

The one truly great one that I have played though is actually not complete yet, but it's still a fun experience. That is this one:

Great beat 'em ups are rare. The genre doesn't attract the smartest devs. Some of the best ones I've played are very old at this point, like The Dishwasher Vampire Smile or Ninja Warriors on the SNES, which got a remake not long ago. There's also Warrior Blade: Rastan Saga Episode III which is pretty awesome and the Japanese versions of Metamorphic Force and The Simpsons arcade are also pretty great. And of course the classic TMNT IV on the SNES.

Sounds promising. What that would be?

Found an OpenBOR game that seems pretty cool, at least as a novelty

I found some looking not that bad to spend couple of evenings:

Battletoads in Batteworld
They took sprites, levels, enemies, bosses from various BT games, and you must all kick their ass. Completely throwing out “platformer” and racing parts. I love complex level from original games, but for others it might be too much. Overall, looks solid for fan game after 2 glasses of tea with rum ::star-war

Another one is
TMNT Shredder’s Revenge

Nothing special, those are turtles and they are teens. ::smirk1 I hope it’s legal.
I have beaten all NES TMNT games already, anyway, still wanna try it out some day.

Oh, this one looks like 2 players only. I found some pak file, but it doesn’t seem work in latest openbor release.

TMNT: Rescue Palooza is worth a look I think as well as TMNT: Recolored and Extended.
It sounds promising.

I have found some collections of OpenBOR packs on Internet Archive, but those are rather old, so not sure if that will work properly.

I only have a handful of OpenBOR games and I just use the .exe they come with. Let me know what you think of Palooza.

I’m old enough to know that one should not click on random exe file from the internets. And even if you see one, wash your hands properly ::winkfelix

I use only this: https://github.com/DCurrent/openbor

Thanks for the game suggestion, will definitely check it out.

GameJolt is legit, I wouldn't send anything that isn't safe.

if like horror type games check out DREAMS OF RAGE it's based off the 3rd nightmare on elm street movie. and it's pretty good for a beat em up.

No offence, that was just a joke. I always prefer native binaries.
BTW, Rescue Palooza looks fantastic, I like mixing levels of classic (S)NES TMNT titles. Adding it to the list for the next party gathering.

Will check it out, we tried original NES Nightmare on Elm Street game, it wasn’t that much fun, but I’m still curious about this one.

And what about some Dungeons&Dragons themed games, what folks think could be worth checking?

None taken, just making it clear I wouldn't send anything that weren't safe. Yeah let me know what you think of it, I'm yet to play through it but it's on my backlog.
