Recommend me a retro open-world game to explore

Fallout 2 and Baldur's Gate 1, pick either original or Enhanced Edition, they're real good and are open world exploration games with main quest you can set aside to explore the world.

Very similar but less open worldy: Fallout 1 is timed and linear and Baldur's Gate 2 is more focused on character interactions in big city instead of exploring wilderness.

"A different game world is generated each time a new game is started; instead of traditional random dungeons, the developers of Virtual Hydlide actually designed more than 20 different level maps for each of the seven dungeons, as well as more than 20 different maps for the overworld. When starting a new game, the maps for the dungeons and overworld are randomly selected from their designated level sets. Thus, though every dungeon design was created by a human designer rather than a random level generator, there are more than 25 billion possible game worlds. Moreover, each game world is identified with an alphabetic code which may be entered when starting a new game, allowing players to replay favorite level designs or compete for high scores on identical worlds. Non-boss enemies do not appear in set locations, and continuously respawn in randomly determined locations."

This sounds dope!

it's an infamously bad game, but it fits the ask here lol

Does it have to be retro?

On Steam you can find quite many pixel art games that are kind of open world, or many RPGs for that matter. Plus they look very retro too.

Lately I played Cosmic Star Heroine and it's absolutely fantastic.

I just don’t have many options with MacBook which is why I don’t use steam.

Depends on what you mean by retro.

For a newer, more contemporary kind of game, I recommend Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories. It’s on PSP and PS2, following a man who goes into the military to help his family, gets blamed for crimes committed by his superior officers, and then has to take to the streets and winds up working with the scum of the Earth to try and make a name for himself.

Secondly, there’s the classic computer game known as “Elite”. An open world space adventure where you fly through star systems, engage with the intergalactic economies, get into dog fights with other ships, and live on the outer rim of space.

Doesn't Steam have an option to list games compatible with Mac or Linux? I don't know how it works, just asking. I only have a Windows computer.
Yes, but the list is way less for Mac compared to pc.

Thanks for the recommendations, I may check them out.
