Rare Ltd. Turns 40 Years Old Today

Happy Birthday to the creators of Banjo-Kazooie and probably the biggest reason to own a Nintendo 64 at all.

(Also to the ones paranoid to the point of making emulation into a gigantic, horrendous task through the use of extra chips on their games).

Battletoads, Jet Force Gemini, Killer Instinct Gold, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Diddy Kong Racing, Perfect Dark, Donkey Kong Country 3, Viva Piñata, Blast Corps, Grabbed by the Ghoulies, Jetpac Refuelled, Kameo, Banjo-Kazooie

Happy 40th, Rare. Thanks for 20 years worth of games. Seriously, have they done anything of note after Perfect Dark Zero that wasn't some Kinect flop or a compilation of their older titles?

With that said, Conker was such a great character. They don't make'em like they used to.

Conker's Bad Fur Day is such a strange game. It's wonderful. I remember belly laughing so hard as a kid hearing the Great Mighty Poo song for the first time on YouTube. Took ages before I finally played the game, but damn did it deliver. Such strange level design and odd characters. I really appreciated the sort of open world feeling it had.

And of course the Donkey Kong games are amongst the best platformers ever. Dope soundtracks too.

Great dev studio, hope all members of the old teams, whether they're still working in the industry or not, are proud of what they achieved.

My favourite game of theirs would be Donkey Kong Country 2 (or the trilogy as a whole, really), but I'm far more nostalgic for Banjo-Kazooie personally - when I think of the N64, I think of Mario 64, Ocarina of Time and Banjo. Defining games of the system.

Pretty crazy longevity in the industry. Of course, they just experienced typical Microsoft-mandated bloodletting and some of their very tenured people are now gone. Hopefully they make it to 50 years.

My favorite Rare game is Donkey Kong Country 2. Probably more for the sick-ass Dave Wise soundtrack than the game, but the game is great too. Actually, scratch that, that is second, first is Donkey Kong Land. Also an amazing soundtrack and a crazy technical achievement for the OG Game Boy in the mid 90s.
