So this year, in the latter part of March and the starts of April, these two dropped.

You have PSXSplash, which is a pipeline for Unity designed for PSX development for actual hardware, and then the standalone engine Pyrite64, which is used for development for the N64.
Should know that despite these two being used for retro game development, they don't magically bypass the important part: Which is knowing the Hardware Limitation and Specs.

However, this could be a good thing as it could lead to some new PSX and N64 homebrews, though I'd wager a lot of 'em will need to be played on emulators since many will probably make games that will not work so well on the actual aging hardware.

What are y'all's thoughts on these engines? And what engines do you wish to see get the same treatment to bring in more homebrews?

And for those who are interested in these two mentioned here are the links to each one.

Glad to see more tools like this. I think the nes and snes are missing this sort of thing no? Those two feel like they could have potential for some neat things.

I do know there are open-source engines currently for the Sega Geneses/MegaDrive, and Sega CD, but yeah the SNES and NES is missing this same love. Though, from what we're seeing? It's inevitable. It's just a matter of when.
For me, I hope to see ones for the Sega Saturn and Dreamcast.

i hope some "puppet combo" style horror games turn up
They'd need to stay within the hardware limitations, but that would be gnarly. Survival Horror had always greatly benefited from older hardware due to the limitations, such as Clock Tower, Hellnight, Silent Hill and so on.

Looks amazing, i think that this should be moved to the general retro gaming section tho?

Sega Saturn has Yaul & more recently the SRL wrapper.

Dreamcast has KallistOS, Simulant, the Spiral 3D game engine guys just put a mini game demo release up a few days ago. (https://darkpath.itch.io/soul-blaze)

Homebrew is going to continue to take off with modern tools.
