PSVITA PSVITA: Would you actually recommenced the system to others?

Listen, I love the Vita a lot, but if we really boil down the system's catalog, most of the best games on there are ports of PS2/3/4 games.
You are underselling it alot, since stationary console games are much bigger scale the anything released on handhelds.
Ninja Gaiden Sigma Collection and Ratchet & Clank Collection were more then enough to sell me on the console.
The handheld has some good originals, but the 3DS outclassed the Vita eventually, and got most of the big-hitting franchises the Vita should have realistically gotten.
Well in that case what does the 3DS have? Hundred Mario spin-offs?
After hours of research the only thing in 3DS that peeked my intrest was Monste Hunter 3U/4U.
I have heard this stetement quite often and yet no one ever elaborates upon what they mean by it nor tries to compare both consoles' game libraries.

It's not really fair at all to say 3DS has more or better games then PSV.
It is a popular belief that doesn't have a factual basis in reality.

The original is the OLED one though, the revision/2nd model is LED. Both are great, but the screen on the OLED (if you can get one that doesn't have any burn in) is truly beautiful.
While I wouldn't necessarily recommend the PSTV, I have one and tend to use it more than my original Vita these days.
Oops I'm a dummy. I have that oled one and I know it's the original. I was getting it mixed up with the lcd Switch model being the original model but the oled Switch being the new one. Also speaking of burn in I have it pretty bad. The blue bar for the browser app is burnt into the side of my screen since I used it for hours at a time to go on a forum site back then

Only if they have a LOT of patience reading through tutorials at random and having to reset everything every time they follow an outdated one. I loved using mine, but a few years ago all my games suddenly refused to load and I eventually gave up trying to figure it out.

...Is it easier now, by the way? If I just wanted to start from scratch? I don't care about save data.

that's actually fucking impressive.

As a portable device, I would choose the PSP first; however, the PSTV, connected to a USB hard drive and with enough software modding, allows you to have 3 consoles in 1 (Vita, PSP, and PSX) occupying the space of a cigarette pack.

I like my Vita, but I'd probably not recommend a Vita to anyone unless they specifically want to play Vita games. But for how much a good quality one usually is, I think a retro emulation handheld would be a better fit for the price. Since even ones that cost ~$100 can generally do N64 and Dreamcast emulation, both of which are a joke on Vita.

If you do specifically want Vita games, then sure, go for it.

Absolutely, I love my vita. When I first got a 3ds, my brain recoiled when I looked at the screens for the 3ds and I realized I was looking at an old phone screen. OF course, I muscled through, the 3ds got some bangers on it, but it was always an issue (god bless the recent castlevania pc ports). When I got my vita years ago, it was night and day. Immediately, I modded it and paid the Pied Pipper (fuck those sd cards prices) and in exchange, I got my favorite handheld to ever be released. IF there is one reason I would rec the VITA, it's for Soul Sacrifice Delta, THAT GAME is an incredible hunting game (monster hunter), it is immaculate and I love it so much.

I reversed burn-in on my oled by using the homebrew "screen flasher" app - it rapidly flashes colours on the screen; leave it running for half an hour or so every day for a week and you should see a noticeable reduction in burn-in... but be wary if you're prone to light sensitivity or have a history of seizures related to flashing lights.

If you can afford it then the Steam Deck is honestly better and I say this as someone who loves their vita.

It all depends. Considering the Vita can do just about everything a PSP can do and more, I see little reason to recommend a PSP to someone who is looking to get one to mod it. Whether you get a 1000 or a 2000 the screens alone are so much better than any PSP model that it feels silly to recommend one. They both typically go for around $100-150 anyways so it isn't even like you're saving considerable cash going for a PSP 3000 (the model anyone is likely to get recommended) over a Vita 2000. If you want an OLED Vita then you're def spending more, but again the $50ish increase in price is worth it when it is just a PSP but way better.

The PSP is forever my favorite system of all time due in no small part to nostalgia, but I struggle to think of why someone would go with a PSP over a Vita in the modern era. Maybe if you already own a PSP in decent condition but not a Vita as it likely isn't worth spending on the upgrade if Vita games and better controls for certain PS1 games aren't an exciting prospect. Even then though I'd just remind anyone that PSPs and Vita 2000s cost about the same so unless they have a highly undesired model like the 1000 they will likely pay little to nothing to just sell their PSP and get the Vita if the PSP doesn't hold enough sentimental value to justify keeping.

Realest answer is just get a Steamdeck but that's still like double the price of a Vita 2000 or PSP 3000 so there is more of a justifiable reason to go with Sony's little handhelds that could, especially if the smaller form factor matters to you.

Not sure if you're talking about the PSP or the Vita but my answer is absolutely yes regardless. Both systems are easily moddable with minimal effort and know-how in the span of just a few minutes, the Vita in particular being doable via the built in browser itself!

Purchased my PS Vita for £50 a long time ago and I got a lot of use out of it (unmodded), until one day I was out and about and the console wanted to connect to the internet to double check my access rights to content purchased. Yes it has online DRM checks.

Once its jailbroken it gives you access to quite a bit of stuff but it's not all 100% download and play. Some of the stuff requires a bit of legwork and reading up.

Nowdays the Vita is a bit more expensive and upkeep might be more difficult in certain countries, so shop around and see if there are cheaper alternatives that offer what you want from a gaming device. Personally i'm sticking with my Vita, theres no other device thats this small and allows me to play pretty much most of the MGS games.

That's not 100% true. All PSP and PSX games on Vita have input lag. While it may be tricky to spot in turn-based RPGs, it does make some rythm or shmup games almost unplayable, especially Patapon 1.
The other thing about PSP emulation is that PPSSPP is just such a great emulator with so many unique features and easy accessibilty that it's hard to give Vita the benefit between the two.

If someone in the homebrew scene were to hack and fix Disney Infinity and make a portal emulator I would say HELL YES, otherwise I wouldn't. I had more fun with my modded Wii.

I can only agree with what some people say here. The Vita is only worth it if you mod it. I played way more PSP, PS1, and emulator games on it than actual Vita games. Honestly, even more PSN games than Vita titles. I might grab a 2000 model, but only because I think I’ll get another 20 years out of it, just like my PSP 2000. Mainly for the higher resolution and better screen. Another reason I’m considering it is Moonlight. Playing PC games on the Vita is awesome, and the Vita just has the perfect shape for handhelds.

The Vita has input lag? Was that the reason I got stuck in Patapon? 🙃Years of self-doubt just lifted from my soul.

For its array of very pleasant exclusives and the sheer range of emulation potential, including Android ports of various games (Soul Calibur for example), it's quite a solid pick. Even the 2000 model holds up well and if you don't fancy importing, it's got some stellar colors in Japan, too.

Got this one for close to 120 bucks.

This is fair but with stuff like Adrenaline Bubble Manager or chovy sign you can reduce the input lag to the point that only more discerning players will notice or care. Def worth noting tho!

Comparing a Vita to PPSSPP of all things isn't really relevant though. Like I said in my comment a Steam Deck is already gonna be king of the castle over either option and PPSSPP is only a relevant analog there. Assuming the portability/form factor matters to someone at all, a PC with emulators isn't gonna replace a handheld.

As a standalone system these days, nah not really unless you can snag one cheap, better off using your money on a cheap laptop. That being said, form factor wise its my favorite hand held and if you're keeping it stock the cartridges are a better bet than the UMDs, I've had two psps umd drives fail. Kinda wish there were Vita movie cartridges though

I guess the price is another factor to take into account. If you can get one below a hundred bucks, it's worth it. For a hundred and above there are already better options (especially now that Vita3K works well with many games)

I've never owned a VITA, but it's hard for me to believe modding it would really be all that amazing considering the many handheld gaming systems released since. Portable PCs will have access to way more software, and games at cheap from Steam or GOG.

For emulation, there are even cheaper handhelds that'll do fine.

I just bought one yesterday after buying a Vita TV a few weeks ago and loving it.

Oh absolutely! I got the vita for various jrpgs on vita as well as access to the psp and psx library. And the fan translations too??? Oh my goodness it never ends. My brother is playing the psp port of the warriors as we speak. It really is for everyone
