According to reports Sony is also working on a companion handheld alongside the PS6 which could potentially launch at the same time as the next-gen console. But how expensive could the portable device be? A well known insider has now offered an estimate. Although an official confirmation is still pending on reports suggest that Sony will not only give gamers a new console in the next generation with the PS6 but most likely also a new handheld that could be released at the same time.
Since the high prices form Microsoft's Xbox handhelds ROG Ally and ROG Ally X are currently causing discussion the top model costs 899 euros in Germany but many PlayStation fans are naturally asking how expensive the rumored PS6 handheld might be. Such high price is probably not to be feared at least according to a well known insider who has now given his assessment provided Sony forgoes a certain feature.
PlayStation handheld cheaper due to smaller chip design?
Well known hardware insider KeplerL2 who has recently commented on the PS6 and the alleged accompanying handheld several times has now spoken out in a post on the ResetEra forum (via TwistedVoxel ) to dispel the concerns of the PlayStation community.KeplerL2 said: The ROG Xbox Ally is "not at all comparable to the PS6 console/handheld. It's a low-volume device manufactured and sold by ASUS for profit." KeplerL2 also explained that Canis the project name for the new PlayStation handheld would utilize a compact system-on-chip design and allowing Sony to keep costs as low as possible. Canis is a very small SoC and also has lower power consumption than any current handheld allowing them to save on circuit boards/cooling/battery.
This price could be the target under one condition
How expensive could the PS6 handheld ultimately be? According to KeplerL2 a retail price of just $499 is certainly feasible and unless they opt for a higher quality OLED screen. But if self-illuminating pixels are used it could be more expensive. Nevertheless the insider's information stands in stark contrast to previous estimates which predicted prices of over $600 for a mobile device with performance close to that of a PS5. By comparison the Switch 2 with its significantly weaker hardware costs €469.99, while the aforementioned ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X cost €599 and €899, respectively and all of these devices also lack an OLED screen. Ultimately it remains to be seen what price Sony will ask for a new PlayStation handheld. First the platform's existence has to be officially confirmed anyway. Another hardware insider Moore's Law has already made it clear that it might not be as expensive as the competition.Thanks to the high field of 3nm chip manufacturing and the sharp drop in memory prices Sony could produce the handheld more cheaply than the PS5. He also believes $499 is the most likely scenario although the price could even be set at $399 if necessary.
