My ps3 has been driving me crazy as of late. I’ll often want to play something and spend about an hour just getting it to read the discs. Even then, there are occasionally problems with sound and games freezing.

I found small fixes and tips on YouTube and got it to work again for the moment. Then everything works and plays fine. It’s like the sometimes. Once I get the discs to read, then everything seems to work fine again. So it’s weird.

If you can help, please reach out. I’m tired of my gaming time being ruined by these aggravations.

Did by any chance you get the latest firmware update 4.92?

Sounds like you might need to adjust the laser in your disc drive or maybe replace it entirely. These things are old enough to buy us a beer, they're bound to fail at some point. Could also be a firmware issue if you're trying to get it to read really recent releases, though this would apply to movies more so than games I believe.

Wouldn't it be better to just mod the console and play your games from an external hard drive?

I would go with the jailbreak method if the disc drive sounds faulty

it's probably the laser dying. It's the most common problem in aging consoles. Either you have to get it replaced or you could ignore it and just do a mod to play games off a hard drive. The PS3 softmod is extremely easy to do.

I've been thinking of softmodding myself. My PS3 makes a weird noise sometimes. Anything with moving parts... It's just a matter of time. ::sadkirby

Yeah it's the laser dying, you should softmod it and get a bigger hard drive and put all your games on that, it's much better, I've not changed a disc on my ps3 for years.

Hopefully it's not that one model of ps3 you can't properly softmod (like mine), you can still go tethered though and it's not that much of a pain to do.

has anyone done the soft mod with hard drive? Is it easy?

I still have a tonne of discs. Is there anything worth keeping a ps3 for apart from:
Mgs4
Infamous 1&2
Time crisis 4 ?

Can’t think of much else that’s exclusive …

When my PS2 gone blind again, I didn't bother fixing it. I just use other methods to play my games now which is also valid ways for PS3 as well. Currently my PS2 reads video games directly via LAN cable. It can also read video games via USB. If I had bothered it could even read video games via heavily modified SSD with direct connection to the PS2's motherboard itself. I can even make it play games via memory card.

The power of thermodynamics is so great it can be used like a magic lol.

It's so easy...

98% chance your ps3 will be HAN compatable a totally untethered softmod, which means you don't need to reapply on restart, but even if it is one of those it HAN won't work on there's always HEN, which you need to reapply on reboot, I need this but it takes about thirty second so it's not a problem.

Yeah swapping the hard drive is very easy, you just need a way to preformat it to fat32.

You're right about the ps3 being a bit pointless these days (there's God of war ascension too)...I like the ps3, it's got this lovely aesthetic to it and I like a lot of the third party downloaded stuff, like Outrun 2...and Shatter.

thanks ok I’ll check that out.
Yes me too I do like the console. And MGS4 very much.
Speaking of god of war - I think it has the ps2 remasters on there aswell.
Downloaded stuff for me I think it’s mainly:
- castlevania - harmony of despair (co-op)
- afterburner climax
- hard corps uprising

Sound like disc drive is dying
Honestly there's are zero reason to not softmod your ps3
Just install Hen and forget about all your problems

This issue has become more prominent as the time goes by, as well as the solution from users. I can understand the regular solution to a lens issue is to not use the lens, because softmodding in this case is very easy, but I also understand the other side: there is people who want the full experience, even if we think it's worse and has no sense overall, because they just want to do it in the way it was meant to be. In this situation, I recommend you buy a second hand lens (or new if you're lucky enough) and change it. There are 2 ways, changing just the lens, so you don't need to remarry the blueray unit, or just get the complete pack, softmod the console, use the tool to remarry the working lens, then continue playing the games like you did until now.

Sometimes it's not about the cost, but about the experience :)

To reply to most, I’ve looked into installing HEN before and that looked complicated to me..even though it may be easy to a lot of people.

To me, I already have tons of memory available on my console and working discs. So figured I’d try to continue this way if possible. There is a repair place in the capital I may consider taking it to if I travel there again in the near future. We will see.

Yes. Personally why I fixed my PS2's lens was just because otherwise all my physical games would go to waste as if I bought them for nothing. My PS2 video game collection is way taller than me lol. Some of them was very hard to find and because of it too expensive.

But then I bumped into another problem: These games always had a chance to be damaged for lots of reasons. For example my SEGA Genesis games can demolish a building, they are not all mighty but compared to disc technology they are very durable lololol.

Then one day I really bothered to convert all my PS2 video games into digital. After my PS2's lens died, I already had my games in digital format. All I had to do was to find a way to play it without a disc.

Yes, playing via disc is so better no argument with that but then we have alternatives. Comparing PS2, playing your digital games on PS3 is relatively so easy. Perhaps I would recommend people to fix it if they can if it was a PS2 but when you have a PS3 no need to worry.

Currently all my PS2 video games are lying there and only has the purpose of visual representation of the digital games I have lol.

PS3 is probably the easiest console to mod
It might sound complicated if you never done it before but it super easy

Download HFW put it on your flash and install on your ps3
Connect your ps3 online go to HEN site and it will install it automatically
that's pretty much it

there is lots of step by step tutorials online

Do you have to have a flash drive that will hold a lot of memory?

I’ve been scared because of all the warnings when I have looked at the instructions in the past. I don’t want to be going on here a day later and posting that I broke my ps3.
You probably confusing it with CFW
It's impossible to brick your console with HEN even if you somehow manage to install it incorrectly with is almost impossible as well

Just watch video i posted before, that guy going to spoonfeed you and show exactly what you need to press
