Ps1 Recommendations?

Ape Escape and the Crash games (with the exception of Crash Bash) are excellent. I'd also recommend Spider-Man, NFL Blitz 2000, Marvel Super Heroes, Darkstalkers 1 and 3, and X-Men: Mutant Academy.

Kyuin
Bushido Blade 1&2
The Legend of Dragoon
Wild Arms 1&2
Breath of fire 3&4
and if you want something extremely different and unique visually, Cho Aniki...

I would recommend trying Jumping Flash, as it's an early 3d game for the console and aside from the sequel there's nothing else like it. Also Resident Evil 1.5 Magic Zombie Door by Team IGAS and Silent Hill.
I remember renting Jumping Flash from Blockbuster and telling my nerd friends that I had no idea how graphics could ever get any better, I thought we had reached a plateau! I can try to add a few less well known, some maybe not so much. (I said I'd try)

  • Disruptor. Early Insomniac developed game, it's a very 90's shooter that still uses a lot of 2D assets mixed with 3D environments and super cheesy 90's FMV cutscenes. I bought this game on a whim back then and loved it!
  • Drink! (Pepsi Man) (JPN only) Such a weird game, but I love the campiness and the graphics style used. I really liked these games that were not entirely 3D assets a lot, and the gameplay is actually pretty decent, it's a lot of trial and error though on a first run. Also has cheesy 90's FMV cutscenes starring a younger version of the AVGN character Pepsi TV Game Guy.
  • Beavis and Butthead: Virtual Stupidity. (JPN with an English patch) B&B Adventure game, so a bit like the Genesis game in a way. If you're not an old fan of the show, it will probably go over your head.
  • Battle Arena Toshinden 2. These are not deep fighters, but the first game did what it needed to do when the 32-bit consoles launched, looked better than Virtua Fighter on cheaper hardware. I actually liked the second game, fast, simple, and for the time very good looking still compared to what else was available on PS1 and Saturn. I've had the music from the intro FMV scene stuck in my head for decades!
  • The Adventures of Lomax. Really solid 2D platformer from Psygnosis. I actually didn't know this one existed till recently, with the right CRT shaders on Retroarch, it's a visual treat as well.
