So I found this video earlier this morning by Macho Nacho explaining a new mod that increases the ram of the PS1 to a whopping 16mbs (which is roughly the same amount in the arcade boards that were brought over the console I think?). It's very impressive, but at such an early stage, there's not much you can really do with it. Some games won't even run, but there is potential with stuff like Gran Turismo

I knew dev units had 8mb and you can even toggle this in Duckstation but 16mb? TIL.

Very cool! I love seeing bespoke hardware get upgrades as it lets us see just how far we can push the system and what kind of results we would get out of that.
Can this upgrade be translated into an FPGA core? Eventually there won't be any compatible hardware left and I feel FPGA is out best chance to allow the "spirit" of the hardware to continue on, so its important we get FPGA core equivalents, including mods, for all systems.

This is cool, but I don't know if I would ever install something like this. The examples shown in the video aren't really compelling enough for me to use it, but I'm excited to see what they're going to do with it.

Like I said, it's incredibly early and we don't know what this is capable of beyond homebrew. Maybe it could end up becoming something like the MSU-1 for the SNES, but obviously a bit more broader?

Hopefully it'll eventually decrease slow down in games like possibly the port of Descent 1, but again, much too early to tell. Maybe it could be the solution to finally end the accursed texture warping like archieninezxadvent said?
