PS1 Hugo Gameplay

Oh hey, haven't seen a Hugo game in ages!
Those games (as well as the Moorhuhn series) were everywhere in Germany back in the day. You could send in coupons from cereal boxes for some of them, get them for free in some gaming magazines - that kind of thing.

I remember one of these Hugo games was playable "over" the TV. They put it up as part of a TV program and callers would play via their phone's keypad. A pretty cool concept!

Oh damn, you're right! I think I remember that, too - you'd send them a horrendously overpriced text message to vote for an action if I remember correctly? The choice with the most votes would then play out.

Man, whatever company owned that IP was really working hard to figure out how to best monetize it. I wouldn't be surprised to hear they were making serious bank back then.

Well, the "version" I mentioned was played "live". It was still the 90's I think.

You'd call the program's phone number with a regular land line, and Hugo was going forward on the train tracks. Pressing maybe "1" on the keypad made him move to the track on the left, pressing "2" made him move to the right. Something like that.

Never tried it personally, it might have all been faked of course ?

Would have been either the 90s or early 00s, yeah - I remember it happening slightly before the era of TV ads for ringtones.
The whole thing being a giant hoax is definitely highly possible. ? Even kid me found that program highly suspicious back then.

Well, it would have been no technical marvel even by then, to hook up a couple of different keypad tones (just like the ages old "press 1 for English, press 2 for...") to a couple gamepad presses on the actual console or PC.

But it's still possible that they didn't really bother with that, and just fake the whole thing, who knows... ::thinking

It was like a 5 minute segment of a non-game-related program anyway.

I was still a child when I watched it on TV. other children called en masse and played on the phone keyboard. those were very good times and I'm sorry that something like that won't happen again. that's why I made this video and published it with the hope that I will get a lot of support from us "nostalgics" I would like you to support me in my work and subscribe to my channel :) tnx guys

It was on french TV, FR3 channel, presented by Karen Cheryl. Pretty infamous because of the lag, as the game was using the phone sounds for control.

These, Hugo in general, was also aired in Finland and very popular. Hugo's playstation games are few of the very rare bunch of fully finnish localized games on the platform. It is actually still to this day very rare outside every Sony 1st party game, but those stopped attempting finnish dubs and stuck to menu and subtitle translations. Hugo is one case that they also dubbed and this back in late 90's early 2000's too. Many of the jokes/quips I still remember to this day. Also the skateboard halfpipe level bug where you can noclip levitate and "win" the stage quite easily.

I own hugo games on ps2 and i know this ps1 game also all hugo games have been translated and dubbed in finnish

I've still got copies of Hugo 2 and The Evil Mirror lying around. Both pretty notorious. I never played the original though. It's neat to see what stages it had

I have still copies agent hugo and that rally game

There's a Hugo rally game? Only Rally game I had on PS1 was V-Rally (I think)
