For those that might have more experience with playing the library on the system than I do (I jumped on around 2018), what are some PS1 games that feel definitive to you when played on a Vita?

Symphony of the Night, Medievil, and Xenogears were absolutely flawless experiences when I played them on the console.

Final Fantasy VIII was also a very pleasant playthrough on Vita for me. Something about how the R button feels makes the Gunblade trigger much more satisfying to use.

Oh the PSP and Vita, how I wished that Sony would do more for the Vita

PS1 games for the Vita though, maybe Metal Gear Solid. They should've included that or Peace Walker in the Master Collection at that time

ive always been a big fan of Tall: Infinity on portables, its a good pick up n play puzzle game. i played it a ton when i first got my PSP, but i'd assume itd work just as well on vita. i also played a lot of LSD Dream Emulator in high school on my vita, for what its worth. Crash 2 is also good

The PSX tales of games on Vita works great. Also aside from the two PSX games you can play two exclusives Vita entries and also the two psp games (one is a remaster of Eternia on PSX) so there's a lot to enjoy.

Both Deception 1 and the original King's Field games (plus Shadow Tower, of course) work beautifully on handhelds. Save points are frequent in both, so you're never far from a place to stop, and the mission-/floor-based structure of each game fits very well into bite-sized chunks or late-night dungeon crawls.

Also, weird effing pick, but the original Gex is something I always associate with handhelds, as well. It's just a standard, fast-paced 2D platformer – and a rather strong one at that – so it's easy to just fiddle with a few levels every now and again whenever the urge for a good Playstation platforming game strikes you.

Ys: The Ark of Napishtim if you are looking for a Good RPG. but any of the Ys game's are worth playing IMO

I'm not very fond of the Vita sticks, so I'd stick to a similar library to what I played on the PSP back in the day: mostly menu-based games. I think RPGs (such as the previously mentioned Final Fantasy Series) and SRPGs (FF Tactics, Super Robot Wars) would be my primary picks. The PS1 also had a fairly big library of visual novels that would play well portably, though the vast majority are jp-only :(

Yeah they would, since you would only really need the X/O button and the D-Pad
Alot of the VN here are Fan translated <you prob seen that tho> But there are a Ton here.

Forgot, the only problem with alot of PS1 games that would work Really well on the PSP/Vita, is the Lack of L2/R2.
Alot of good games use all 4 shoulder buttons, Sympathy of the night. Bat/Mist/Wolf all req a shoulder button, Albeit. there is some Work around for mist if i recall like Triangle+L1 or something. But yeah, really wish they or at-least the vita had the 4 shoulder buttons.

RPGs are the obvious answer and if you are one of the lucky few to have a nice trigger grip then damn near any game plays great on Vita. I will say with some customization you can play games like Kingsfield and Shadow Tower super well despite lacking L2/R2 without a grip. Back on PSP when I first played through KF2 and Shadow Tower I set the L2/R2 functions to the analog nub and it worked out pretty great, same applies to the sticks on Vita.

Twisted Metal is another series that while not as comfortable does play great on Vita once you rebind L2/R2 (firing weapons and machine guns respectively) to the base triggers and then assign L1/R1 (cycling your weapons) to an analog stick. Using left and right on a stuck to cycle weapons feels pretty intuitive and TM is a franchise that requires you to use the dpad for driving and special inputs anyways so there's no real loss. Very thankful to Sony for letting players totally customize control bindings on an emulator level as early as the PSP. I know this thread is about games that feel best on Vita but I figured I'd throw my two cents in on how games that would control poorly via default controls can be made just as good with a little tweaking.

I'm an absolute sucker for the Ys series but I haven't played a single one on Vita with exception to Memories of Celceta. VI being on PSP always felt a little strange to me because of the timeframe but it's still cool.

I actually did a playthrough of Gex 1 recently on Vita and it was a damn good time. I remember it being rather frustrating for some reason when I tried it on real hardware years ago but I didn't have any snags when I decided to try it again on Vita.

Most of them honestly. They look beautiful on the Vita's screen, and the Vita is comfortable enough to play action games on. But I guess RPGs and survival horrors are a particularly good fit.
